Robert looked busy tapping on his phone. But every now and then, he would glance at us. I wondered why he was hanging around, if he just wanted to entertain himself or if he was deliberately annoying me.
I excused myself, wanting to get out of that circus. I wasn’t interested in being the center of attention, especially not in that way.
On my way back to my desk, I noticed a lovely young woman in the reception area. I immediately recognized her face because I’d been seeing her several times in TV commercials and magazine print ads. But what caught my attention was the folder she was carrying that had the logo of Fantasy Flicks, a famous company known for providing unique film production and celebrity experiences to ordinary individuals and groups.
Recently, my best friend Raven transferred there to work as a makeup artist while also auditioning for some of their minor actress roles.
Since I was also planning to get some documents from Sandy, I went over and did that. Then I introduced myself to the dazzling model. She was much prettier up close too.
“Hi! How are you?” I said in greeting. “My name is Atty. Kayla Brown. Are you waiting for someone?”
“Hello, Atty. Brown,” she replied, facing me with a tentative smile. “Yes, my lawyer is coming out now.”
“That’s great,” I said. “By the way, I couldn’t help recognizing you from that shampoo commercial and also the one for a travel agency, I think?”
“Ah, that’s right,” she said with a grin.
“I love those ads,” I told her sincerely. “So you’re doing a stint for Fantasy Flicks too?” I motioned to the folder she was holding.
She nodded, her eyes brightening. “Yes, they invited me to play a major role in one of their productions. I’m really excited about it.”
As we talked some more, I found out that she would be the lead actress for the film that Raven was auditioning for.
“My friend’s always had a penchant for acting,” I said. “But she still hasn’t found that breakthrough. But I’m so happy for you…”
“Yes, recently, I’ve been praying for this,” she confided. “But I’ve been having problems with my agent, so that’s been on my mind too, and it’s distracting me from my goals. I really need to file a case, I think…”
To my surprise, she began to tell me about her legal concern. It wasn’t detailed, but I could get a clear picture of it. I nodded and just gave her my outright honest advice afterwards.
“That’s a good next step,” she agreed. “I’ll definitely consider it.”
“Well, of course, you’ll have to speak with your lawyer about it. He or she might provide other insights and recommendations.”
She suddenly reached out and squeezed my hand. “Can you be my lawyer instead?” she asked eagerly with a hopeful glint in her eyes. “I haven’t signed a contract with the other one yet. I just got referred to him when I called before.”
“Uh…” I hesitated, feeling alarmed yet excited at the prospect of working with her. We seemed to get along well and feel comfortable with one another too.
“I feel like I’ve known you for a long time, like I can really trust you…” she said. “Please?”
“It’s not up to me,” I said. “Let’s discuss it with the other lawyer. What’s his name?”
She thought for a while. “I think… Uh, Ronald? Roland? Hhmm… No, no… Robert!” Her eyes lit up as she remembered. “Yes, that’s it. Atty. Robert Jefferson!”
I felt my heartbeat quicken and my blood pressure rise. I felt like laughing and jumping up and down at the same time.
And speaking of the devil…
“Hello, Ms. Maya Liberty?” I heard his deep, striking voice from behind me. He did not bother to acknowledge me, but I saw a flicker of displeasure in his eyes directed toward me.
“Oh, hi!” Maya greeted. “You must be Atty. Jefferson! Thanks so much for talking to me yesterday, but I think I will just go with Atty. Brown here.”
Oh, my.
Robert looked at her blankly at first, probably not understanding or absorbing what she was saying.
“Atty. Brown can take my case, thank you,” Maya emphasized.
Robert frowned. Without glancing at me, he said, “Well, that’s no problem at all. We are certainly happy that you have chosen our firm. All of our lawyers are well-equipped to help you. But Atty. Brown here is new and…”
