I leaned closer to her and gazed into her beautiful eyes. “I don’t mind as long as I get stuck with you,” I whispered.
She met my eyes. For a few seconds, I felt like the world had stopped. Everything around us faded away. All our concerns melted into nothingness. It was just the two of us, engulfed in our little balloon, wanting to kiss each other so badly.
She closed her eyes and leaned forward, her hands wrapping around my neck. I placed my hands on her waist and lowered my head. Our lips came together in a soft, gentle kiss.
But then, suddenly, my phone rang and vibrated, causing us to jump apart in surprise.
I was about to turn it off when Kayla checked the screen and saw a woman’s name. “You should answer it,” she said.
I saw the name. It was Janna. That made me groan, which caused Kayla to look at me suspiciously. “Who is that?”
“A celebrity client,” was all I said.
I answered it. “Hi, Janna!” I greeted.
Since it was a video call, her face appeared at once on the screen. I didn’t really care if Kayla could see it. I wasn’t hiding anything from her.
Janna looked like she was drunk, even though she was all made up. “I miss you so much, Robert!” she said in a desperate tone, pouting her red lips and then puckering up on the screen. “I miss your kisses!”
Uh-oh. This wasn’t going to be good.
I remember making that mistake of kissing her about a year ago. It was just a kiss, and I managed to stop it at once before it got to the next level. But she never forgot about it and would always ask me for it when she was drunk or going crazy with her problems in life. Yes, I’ve sort of become a life coach to her, too, not just a business or tax coach.
I could see Kayla frowning beside me.
I was about to say goodbye to Janna when, to my shock, she revealed that she was half-naked, wearing nothing but just a pair of black lace panties. “Don’t I look good, Robert?” she said in a voice that confirmed she was very drunk.
Kayla’s eyes widened. “Client, huh!” she muttered, standing up and then walking away.
I turned the phone off, ending the call. I grabbed Kayla’s arm to stop her, though I carefully handled her gently. “Please, Kayla… Listen to me… It’s not what you think. Janna’s always been like that.”
“You kiss all your clients and watch them get naked in front of you?!” she said in a furious voice. Her eyes flashed with hurt and anger.
Before I could answer, she added, “Oh, wait. I’m just a guest here and have no right to question whatever you do with your clients or anyone else.”
She began to stomp away, but I stopped her again, standing firmly before her and refusing to budge.
“Get out of the way, Robert!” she said through gritted teeth.
“Calm down, Kayla,” I told her. “I’m sorry you had to see that. Janna always flirts with me, but when she’s drunk, she really acts differently. Please, Kayla. There’s nothing between us, and I never ever had any interest in her. I’m telling you the truth.”
“So you do like celebrities,” Kayla muttered under her breath. But then she met my eyes and tried to calm down. “I’m sorry I can’t help my hormones. I don’t want to make a fuss, but I… It’s… I don’t know how to explain it…”
I took both of her hands in mine. To my relief, she didn’t push me away. She just sighed with disappointment. A look of confusion was evident on her face. “I don’t even know what this is… us… this…” she began. “I’m not sure how I feel about you…”
“It’s alright,” I assured her. “We don’t have to rush things. We’ll take it slow. It’s new to me too… I don’t know how I feel either… except that I don’t like upsetting you, and I just want to protect you and make you happy all the time…”
I was opening up too much to her. It was downright frightening.
She looked shocked at what I was saying. She seemed speechless.
“Janna means nothing to me,” I stressed the truth. I pulled her close to me and kissed the top of her head. “But you… No matter how hard I try not to think about you and not worry about you, it’s just impossible.”
She let me hug her tightly. I could feel the baby bump between us. It made me scared and excited at the same time. But I knew I was willing to go through that journey with Kayla.
Slowly, gently, I walked her to the guest room. “What do you think of Asha?” I blurted out from the random thoughts whirring inside my head.
She gave me a strange look. “Huh? What Asha?”
