Suddenly, there was a knock on the door. I knew that Robert had gone biking with his son, so I figured it was Anna.

“Come in,” I said.

The door opened slightly. An unfamiliar woman, probably just a bit older than me, came in. She was dressed in white and had a nurse’s hat on her head.

“Good morning, Atty. Brown,” she greeted politely. “I’m Olga, your private nurse. Atty. Jefferson sent me here and said I am to monitor your condition and take care of all your needs starting today.”

“What?” I said in astonishment. “Thanks so much, but is it really necessary?”

“It will certainly help if you’re on bed rest and the helper is busy with the house chores,” Nurse Olga explained.

“Well, you’ve got the point,” I said.

She handed me a tray that contained a bowl of oatmeal with fruits and a plate of scrambled eggs. “Here’s your breakfast. Afterwards, you can take your medicine and vitamins.”

“Alright, thank you,” I said. The food looked so delicious that I could feel my stomach grumbling. I gobbled up everything in a very short time, feeling satisfied but a tiny bit guilty from eating so much.

“Don’t worry about your appetite,” the nurse said with a friendly smile. “It’s normal. What’s important is that you eat nutritious food to keep your baby healthy.”

“You’re absolutely right,” I agreed. “Thanks!”

She pointed out the pills I needed to take. Then afterward, she even prepared my clothes and assisted me to the bathroom.

“It’s okay, Olga,” I said. “I’m capable of walking to the bathroom. I think the doctor said I could do that and take a shower on my own.”

“Yes, of course,” Olga replied. “But I’ll be here right here if you need me.”

I smiled at her and went into the room’s adjoining bathroom. It was great to be pampered, but I wasn’t used to it. I felt like my privacy was being invaded.

When I came out, a range of items was packed in lovely boxes beside the bed. Nurse Olga said they were a gift from Robert. I was glad when she eventually stepped out and said I could call her for any need.

“Oh, Robert,” I said as I rummaged through the items. There was a box filled with healthy snacks and goodies. Another box was packed with beauty needs, like stuff for my face before sleeping and upon waking up, a nail cleaning set, belly butter, and more. Meanwhile, the third box had things that could keep me preoccupied — books, a deck of cards, and a tablet filled with digital games.

I couldn’t believe Robert had thought of everything. Or maybe it was Willard? Or Anna? Or Olga? I silently laughed as I pondered on that. It could also be some expert on pregnancy. Well, nevertheless, it was still a sweet, touching gesture.

I decided to send him a message of thanks. In less than a minute, I got a reply. We had a friendly banter through chat, which made me start my day right.

By lunchtime, I was bored out of my mind. I’d already tried out most of the games on the tablet and wasn’t in the mood to read or do anything else. I needed a change of scenery!

I called my new doctor and asked if I could walk around the house or transfer to the garden. She asked how far it was from my room, so I had to lie and give a distance I guessed would be approved. I was right! She said it’s okay!

I made an effort to walk very slowly because the garden was actually on the other side of the house. Olga saw me and looked worried, but I brushed her off. “Just let me do this, or I will go crazy in that room!” I told her. Good thing she nodded and distanced herself, but I could see her checking me out and inching closer every now and then.

It was a bright, sunny day. The flowers in the garden were in bloom too. They were so pretty, making me shift into a good mood again. “If I lived in a house like this, I think I’d rather stay home all the time,” I said out loud.

“Yeah, me too.” I turned around and saw Olga hanging back. I motioned for her to join me. She was carrying my lunch, anyway.

“Olga, why don’t you eat here too with me?” I suggested. “We can keep each other company.”

She nodded and got her food. We ended up chatting for hours. I was thankful for the companionship. With my outgoing personality, being with another person was so much more beneficial for my overall well-being.

After a while, I could hear Riley talking to Anna, worried about his project.

“Olga, can you find out what they’re worrying about?” I said. She nodded and left. In a few minutes, she was back with Anna.

“Miss Kayla, Riley has another crochet project,” Anna explained. “Sir Robert hired my friend to help him with it last time. But my friend is unavailable this week. I’m going to try to find someone else. Would you know anyone who’s good at it?”

A grin spread across my face. “I know just the person!”
