I didn’t need to make much effort to act out the scene. But the director talked to me afterward, looking so ecstatic.
“You were amazing!” he said.
“But I just walked in and did nothing,” I answered with a laugh.
“Oh, no, no, no! Your face had the perfect lost expression, and you nailed that scene and that character! Where on earth did Raven find you?!”
I laughed again. “Raven and I go a long way back. We’re best friends.”
“Wonderful!” the director said. “Can I invite you to audition for a commercial I’m filming?”
“What? Uhm, I’m not really an actress,” I said politely. “I’m a practicing lawyer.”
The director laughed for a while, then realized I was serious. He looked absolutely stunned. “Oh, my gosh. You’re not joking! Well, that’s just incredible! A lawyer who looks like a Hollywood star! You might want to consider changing careers in the future. Please contact me if you’re interested.”
“I will,” I said, grinning. “Thank you so much.”
Robert had heard the whole thing and was also grinning. “Didn’t I tell you you looked like a starlet?” he teased, reminding me of my first day at Lee and Emery Law Firm.
“Shut up!” I said, slapping his shoulder and laughing. I actually felt happy and free.
He suddenly grinned at me back in the car, driving away from Fantasy Flicks.
“What’s on your mind?” I asked, narrowing my eyes at him.
“So tell me…” he started. “Did you think of us while you were doing that scene?”
I knew what he was referring to. I blushed as I remembered the thoughts that ran through my mind while the cameras were rolling during that scene. I couldn’t help it. The tempestuous kisses, the way he’d touched me and made me moan passionately… Everything had come back.
“No,” I lied.
“Really…” he said, but he didn’t believe me.
“That’s all in the past,” I said. “It’s done. And look where it got us.”
“It gave us a blessing,” he said gently. “That child you are carrying is a blessing, Kayla. Always remember that.”
I bit my lip, feeling guilty and suddenly wanting to cry. Deep within me, I knew he was right. I should treat this child better. If it were me, I wouldn’t want to feel unwanted, either.
I stayed quiet for the rest of the ride. But to my surprise, he did not take me to my apartment. Instead, he took me to a huge beautiful house with a grand driveway and a manicured lawn. I was guessing it was his place.
“Is this your house? Why are we here?” I began to feel tense again. He was up to something, and I hated that he did not ask permission first.
He leaned over and squeezed my hand gently. “Yes, this is my house. I had asked our servant Anna to prepare something for you.”
“What? But why?” I said, sensing panic rising inside me. “I want to go home.”
“Let’s have dinner first, please?”
I sighed and finally nodded. He went around to open the door for me, but I climbed out of the car before he could do that. He was just being a gentleman, but I wasn’t interested in being treated that way. We were not a couple, after all. And I was not handicapped, just pregnant.
Anna turned out to be a very nice middle-aged lady. I could understand why Robert loved her like his own mother.
“Are you sure you’re not a Hollywood actress pretending to be a lawyer?” she joked kindly as she laid down some prepared dishes.
“I’m sure,” I said, laughing. “But thank you.”
Robert grinned at me and mouthed,I told you so.
