We talked a little bit. Then I told her to sleep some more while we were waiting. I stepped away and saw my friend George.

“Your friend is anemic,” he told me. “Perhaps it’s always been there, just a mild condition. But it’s been causing fatigue more because of iron deficiency brought about by her pregnancy.”

“What?” I said in shock. “She’s pregnant?”

“Yes, nine weeks,” my doctor friend confirmed. “Maybe she wasn’t aware? Let me have a chat with her. I’ll also have to explain about the iron supplements and vitamins I’ll be prescribing and some food she will need to eat more of.”

I nodded, dazed and confused and a little bit troubled.

Nine weeks.

I started counting backward. It coincided with our sexual encounter in the warehouse.Could it be---?

I shook my head in disbelief, beginning to pace back and forth in the emergency room.I must talk to her.

She was already sitting on the bed when I went to her. George gave me a pat on the shoulder. “All good,” he said. “Take care of her.”

“Yeah, I will,” I replied. “Thanks so much.”

Kayla was strangely staring at me. She was trembling a little. I grabbed her jacket from the nearby chair and placed it around her shoulders.

Then I gazed into her wide blue eyes. “Did you know that you were… pregnant?” I whispered.

She shook her head. She looked quite shocked. “I thought… I always have irregular periods, so I never thought much about it when I didn’t get my period for two months straight. I was just too busy…”

I nodded in understanding. “But now you have to take care of yourself, Kayla. Another life’s depending on you.”

Her eyes widened even more as if she could not believe it. Then she just nodded and looked like she wanted to burst into tears. But she was trying to maintain her composure.

“Kayla…” I said with hesitation. There was a lingering question in my head that was greatly bothering me. We both knew that it was an inevitable question. “Is the baby… Do you know… who the father is?”

Her eyes began to water. Her lips started to tremble slightly. “I’ve… never been with anyone else… since I graduated…” she slowly said in barely a whisper.

My chest seemed to fill up with confused emotions. My heart felt like it wanted to burst out from my rib cage. My suspicion was about to be confirmed.

“You’re the father, Robert,” Kayla said, her eyes drilling a hole into mine. “You are the father of this baby.”

My heart plummeted to the floor.

Chapter 11

KAYLA

Wewerequietinthe car, both of us trying to absorb the reality of the situation. I was shocked, to say the least.

I never thought something like this could happen to me.What would my father say? What would happen to my career? It was all too much too soon.

We had sex once. What were the chances I would get pregnant?I felt like I was floating in a dream.

He parked in front of my apartment building and got out with me. “You have to let me go up with you, Kayla,” he said. “I want to make sure you don’t suddenly black out again.”

A part of me found it hard to believe that he was concerned about this baby or me, even though he’d gone out of his way to attend to me since I got dizzy in the lobby of our office building.

I was too dazed even to react. I just let him follow me.

“Would you like to come in?” I asked, just out of courtesy since he’d helped me a lot that day.

He nodded. “Just for a while. I want to make sure you’ll be fine.”
