He still sounds the same, like a warm child who gives everyone a hug at school but teases them first. I’ve missed him so much.

“Hey, before you ask any questions, I wanted to find out something.”

He’s quiet for a while.

“What’s that?”

“Do you have any idea why Eva paid off my parents’ debt?”

He exhales.

“Oh, about that. Jason went to see Mr. Davidson, the owner of Dame United Bank. His plan was to pay off the debt himself, but Mr. Davidson made Eva pay when Jason told him Eva was the one who released the article.”

I blink. “Did you say Jason?”

He chuckles. “Hard to believe, right? I think he really cares about you.”

My throat closes. Jason is responsible for this? He was going to pay the debt? My heart starts to race. I want to believe Richard's statement, but it sounds too good to be true. Things don’t happen like that with just a finger snap. Well, it’s not like Richard would be lying about that anyway. If there’s one thing about him, he’s as blunt as it gets.

“But how did he find out about the loan?”

“He went over to your parents’ shop to see if he’d find you. He found it shut, but there was a small slip on it from the bank.”

Wow. I stay silent. This is a lot to take in. I need to see Jason. I have to see Jason right now.

“Richard…can you come pick me up? I need to see Jason. Don’t tell him, please.”

“On my way. Send your address.”

“Okay.”

When the call ends, my fingers fly over my screen as I type the address and hit thesendkey. I exhale and put my phone away, looking up at Mom and Dad, who are staring at me like they’ve seen a ghost.

“So Jason…” I look over at Mom. If she flinches at the mention of the name, she doesn’t show it.

“He’s the one behind it. According to his brother, he went to the shop and saw that it was closed. That’s how he found out about the loan. Apparently, he knows the owner of the bank. He went to him directly and it was sorted. The owner made his daughter pay for it as a consequence of the article she published about Jason and me.”

Their mouths drop.

“I have so many questions. But let’s start here—you’re telling me Jason has a personal relationship with the owner of Dame United?”

I smile. I completely forgot how out of my league he is. He knows all the influential people. I wouldn’t be surprised if he knows Beyonce on a personal level too.

“So his daughter was the one who released the news? I wonder why,” Mom says.

“Err…excuse me. I’ll be taking my leave now.”

We completely forgot the Dame United staff was still standing at the door. He waves awkwardly and turns to leave, but he stops halfway.

“The place is open. I did that before I got here.”

Dad rubs his fingers together, beaming. “Thank you so much! Thank you!”

Finally, he takes his leave, and Dad turns back to me.

“How can we show our appreciation to this young man? I’m so relieved.”

“Me too, Dad. I just spoke to Richard. He’s on his way here. I’ll go see him myself.”
