I begin with chest compressions, stopping at fifteen to give her a breath.

Her body arches into mine as I give her my oxygen, and her beautiful gray eyes open.

My chest feels tight. I forget to breathe when I see those eyes. Relief washes over me instantly.

I pull back to give her room as she starts coughing.

“You need to stay still,” I tell her, just as flashing lights illuminate behind the car.

Her body sinks back into the seat, and her eyes start to drift shut. “Stay awake, Lucky Charm,” I tell her, my voice gentle but firm. She opens her eyes reluctantly, doing her best to keep them open.

Alexi jumps out of his car right behind the emergency vehicle. He comes running to my side of the car.

“What the fuck happened?” he asks.

I’m in no mood to deal with his shit right now. As far as I’m concerned, this is all his fault. A Medic approaches the car, and two men attempt to check me over first when I snap. “She’s bleeding and I just had to give her CPR, you fuckwits! Get her to the hospital and get a CT scan, NOW!” I yell. Having had some emergency training, in case one of us is injured, I know mostly how the process works. And I know damn well I should be the last thing on their priority list.

They instantly snap to it, going over to Evie and working to get her out of the car.

The whole ordeal takes fifteen minutes before they begin to load her into the back of an ambulance. Alexi grabs my shoulder as I start to climb into the back with her.

“Now would not be a good time to push me, Lex,” I warn him, refusing to look his way. Unbridled rage radiates from every pore in my body.

He lets go, and I climb into the seat beside her without bothering to look back. Evie lost consciousness again as they were pulling her out of the car. Her breathing is all I can focus on. I want to blame Alexi, but I let her get in that car. I let this happen. If she dies, or if anything happens to her, it’s on me.

Chapter 23

After extensive testing, the doctor finally comes in. I might have yelled at everyone in the facility to make Evie the priority, so hardly an hour has passed. She seems to be sleeping comfortably, and even though she is hooked up to all of the monitors, I keep my eyes trained on her chest—watching her breathe.

The doctor walks in and approaches me straight away. “Hey, I’m Doc.”

“Doc?” I ask. I know The Society requires code names here but that one sure isn’t original.

“Yes, it’s straightforward and unforgettable. Anyways,” he says with a dismissive wave as he picks up Evie’s chart, “we were able to rule out a brain bleed. I was told you had to give her some brief CPR.” He flips through her chart briefly before continuing. “I believe the impact of the crash stunned her heart, making it stop temporarily. It’s a good thing you were there. The CPR probably saved her life.”

He takes a moment to look over at Evie’s sleeping form, closing the chart he looks back to me. “She has a concussion, but that’s it. Wake her every hour, ask her where she is and her name. If she wakes up and can answer those two questions easily over the next twelve hours, then she should be good.”

I nod at him. “Anything else?” I’m not too keen to bring her back to the suite, but I plan to make some adjustments there.

“She has stitches in her head. They will dissolve on their own, but you'll have to make her wait to wash her hair for a day. If the swelling is bad, use ice. Other than that, Tylenol should do the trick. If she needs something stronger, then just call,” he says and hands me a card with his name and number on it.

“A nurse will be in shortly to take her off the monitors so you can take her to her suite,” he informs me before dismissing himself.

A tall man with a white button down and navy slacks comes walking in the room when the doctor leaves.

“You must be Lev,” he states as he sticks out his hand. I shake it and nod in confirmation. “I’m the Dean of the university for the time being. My name is Arrow. I wanted to see how she was doing?”

“She seems alright,” I tell him as I look down at her. “Doc here thinks I can take her back to the suite.”

“That’s great. I’m here if you guys need anything. Please let me know if anything happens that has her coming back here. My number is programmed into your tablets. It’s not an order, just a request. You three are still in charge, I’m just here to help as a resource for everyone.”

“Alright, I will. Thanks for checking in on her.”

“I wouldn’t do it for everyone, but I met her this week and I can tell she’s someone special. Take good care of her, okay?”

I look at him then and see real concern in his eyes. “I will,” I promise him. And I mean it, too. He leaves the room shortly after and I notice it’s time to wake Evie up and check on her.

I brush her hair back from her face and notice she has a sheen of sweat on her forehead. She jerks awake suddenly, sitting up and gasping for breath. Instantly her hands go to her head.
