If a commandment is broken and you present proof, you are given the opportunity to serve justice under the rule of Omerta. I provided the proof needed before deleting everything, and I was also careful to only let them see enough to convict the bastard.
His father was notified, and their organization was banned from sending another heir to the island for three generations. I was told his father disowned him during the trial, and no one has come to see his final breath.
Damien, Lev, and I set up reinforcements around the top of the stands. Evie’s plan was scarily good. She seems to predict threats I never would have taken into account. I’m worried about our talk tomorrow, but I’m even more worried about what happened between us today.
Evie felt so good wrapped in my arms, grinding down on me without shame. Her little moans were sounds I want to record and keep forever on repeat in my head. I can see now why Damien and Lev are so in tune with her. When she lets go, her body tells me exactly what it wants—and she wants to be dominated.
I felt her practically vibrate with excitement as I took control, grabbing her hips and forcing her down on me. She makes me crazy, always challenging my control and attempting to claim it for herself. But the way she gave me control was like a drug. I never would have let her go. I would have claimed every inch of her if we weren’t so rudely interrupted.
I’m glad Nessa came to warn her, and that letting her go actually seemed to pay off, but the timing was shit. What made it even worse was the fact that we couldn’t talk about anything after. I couldn’t even get a read on her feelings while we were planning this. It was as if she forgot it completely.
The idea of it meaning so much to me and so little to her makes my chest ache. I’ve always kept my distance from women, and this is why. No one could ever want someone as fucked in the head as I am. And what's even worse is, she knows just how messed up I really am.
“All clear over there?” Lev asks, setting down his now empty bag.
“Yeah, just placed the last one. Is everyone else ready?”
Damien walks up behind me then. “The girls just checked in. All good.”
The doors to the field lock, barricading the opponents inside a fifteen-foot walled arena with no escape. Chain link fencing rises up on each side until it creates a dome shape at the top. Perfect for keeping the battle below, but not great if anyone above has weapons that aren’t stopped by metal fencing.
Finishing our task, we head down the stairs to meet up with the girls. Nessa had two suitemates who pledged their loyalty to us and Evie, bringing our grand total to nine people. We have no idea how many students are going to be involved in today's ambush, but we also know that the alarms will sound and lockdown procedures will be put into place as soon as the first shot is fired. All but one exit will be barricaded, windows and doors will become impossible to break, and the black boxes will be locked up tight until the all-clear is given.
The Society will have a front-row seat to the first-ever island war, and they will witness the eight of us come out as victors if it’s the last thing I do.
“Are you guys all set?” Evie asks as we descend the stairs.
“Yup, Little Shadow,” Damien says, going to her and lifting her up in a bear hug. “We’ve got it all covered.” He puts her back down on two feet and wraps an arm around her shoulders. “You ready to kill this motherfucker?”
“I’ve been ready since that moment on the beach, I’m just glad that now I won’t have to hide his body,” she shrugs.
Damien's grin at her response is contagious. I find myself actually smiling with all of them for once. He walks Evie to the door leading to the arena, not taking his arm from around her shoulders and Lev on her other side squeezing her hand. Everyone else moves to their designated spot, but I stay for a moment to watch them together
My jaw clenches. On one hand, I’m so fucking elated that my brothers have found someone who makes them happy. But, on the other hand, I don’t know where my place is with them anymore. I shake the thoughts from my head, knowing I need to focus and walk to my position.
Damien and Lev will be in the arena with Evie. They can’t interfere with the duel, but they can provide support from the sidelines and ensure there is no dirty fighting. The girls will sit under the black boxes, strategically placed above everyone to make sure if anything breaks out, we have the higher-ground advantage. I’ll be standing by the only exit, prepared to take down anyone who appears to side with Bryce and Natalya.
???
The arena fills quickly, the tardy rule taken even more seriously with The Society present. Private helicopters escort each member here, and they enter through a secure location so that their identities remain anonymous to us, as well as each other. The whole premise of The Society wouldn’t work if we all knew who to make friends within order to pick sides. With everyone's identities kept secret, it prevents a war from within the organization.
I look up at the black boxes, wondering if Evie’s family is here and who exactly they could be. I’m not sure if I’m more anxious about the ambush or for her to tell us who she is. The announcer's voice disrupts my thoughts, coming over the speakers in a strong British accent. .
“We are gathered here today, for the trial of Bryce Leyva and Evie James. Bryce has been deemed guilty by The Society, and under the law of the Omerta, there will be a duel to the death in the pursuit of justice. The Society takes crimes against one another seriously. To bring harm to another on our island of education is dishonorable. From this moment on, Bryce will be known as an Oathbreaker and be known by no other name for however long he shall live. Let the Oathbreaker meet his justice.”
The doors to the other end of the arena open and Bryce walks forward. Broken blisters cover his skin from where the sun scorched him on his journey back to the island. His hair is wild and disheveled, but his eyes are full of malice. Evie’s at the other end of the arena, smiling like the woman of death she truly is. Damien and Lev stand behind her, scanning the field and the crowd simultaneously.
