Chapter 47

I’m sitting in my room, watching the cameras I installed outside our door and in the living room. My leg is bouncing in anticipation, anxious to get started with my little plan. Anytime a person shows up, I get an alert. Ever since that damn video went out, I’ve had to deal with several students and teachers. First, banning them from the island, and then coming up with creative ways for them to have little ‘accidents’ when they leave.

It’s not that I have morals because I basically forced Evie to do the same thing that the now dead police chief did. I just have a specific vendetta against anyone who tries to touch what’s mine. And Evie James ismine.

She still doesn’t believe me, but after seeing her break, I’m determined to make this right. I’m not big on saying sorry, I believe you have to work to earn forgiveness. I’ve been working for almost three months now, and she will hardly even look in my direction. I've got a plan to change all of that.

She doesn’t leave the room the moment I enter so I take that as a win at least. But I know I owe her something big. In my anger and grief, I had wanted to hurt her, even if I didn’t send that video. I have done everything in my power to find out where that video came from. Lev said the way it shows up on the server is almost like a ghost uploaded it. Damien suggested that maybe The Shades were behind it. Except it wouldn’t make sense for them to go after her like that. The video seemed too personal.

We still have no leads for why The Shades would be after us, either. I’ve sent messages all over and no one has heard a thing. It appears as if they are aiming directly for the head families. I just can’t understand why. We have good relationships with our allies, and there is nothing we've done lately that's worthy of going to war for.

I hear Evie’s door open and I rush to the kitchen. It’s time for her morning coffee and I plan to bring it to her. I don’t know if I’ll be able to get her to listen to me, but I have to try. Seeing Lev and Damien so cozy with her has an ugly green monster clawing at the surface.

I enter the kitchen just in front of her, causing her to huff in annoyance. She’s not a morning person I’ve noticed. I pour a cup of coffee and mix it with a shit ton of sugar and milk just as she likes. Turning around, I hand it to her.

She hesitates, and I feel like an idiot. After what Bryce did, I’d be reluctant to accept anything from anyone ever again.

“It’s not drugged,” I try to joke. “You watched me make it.”

Still, she hesitates. “Why are you being nice? It’s weird.” While her voice says she’s annoyed, her lips twitch with just a hint of a smile.

“How did you sleep?” I lean against the counter as she sits at the island across from me.

She shrugs her shoulders before taking a sip, seeming surprised it tastes exactly how she likes it. She has no idea how observant I am. “Pretty good, I guess. I did have a dream where I killed you in your sleep though.” She takes another sip as my brows pinch, processing what she just said. “I have to say, I’m a little relieved to find you still alive this morning.”

A half smile forms on my face. It feels foreign. “Oh yeah? Did it turn out that you don’t actually hate me as much as you pretend to?”

“I don’t hate you,” she says, making me almost grin.I knew it. “But I am glad to know I’ll still have the opportunity to kill you. My dream didn’t last as long as I would have liked, and there wasn’t nearly enough blood.”

I clench my fists. How the fuck can she make me go from almost begging to be on her good side, to me wanting to slam her against the wall with my hand around her throat so quickly? I take a deep breath. I don't want her to see just how much she gets to me. I came out here with a plan, and I can’t move forward with that unless I have a level head.

“I told them to set Bryce’s trial for this weekend,” I inform her. I assume she already knows, but I also want her to know that I was the one who ensured he will be dealt with quickly.

“You did that?” she asks, dumbfounded.

“I did.” I lean over the island across from her. “But I also did something else I want to share with you. Someone else was involved, and I may or may not have them waiting for you in Damien's little torture shed.”

Her eyes widen in shock. “Who?”

“Well, that information is going to cost you,” I say. Her eyes drop to my lips before looking back up at me.

“I’m not fucking you,” she says, and I can't help but laugh.

“Princess, when I fuck you, it’ll be because you asked for it. Not because of some deal.” I wave off her attempts to protest. I have every intention of fucking her, but she needs to see who I really am first.

“The deal is, I will hand this person over to you." Evie looks at me with suspicion all over her face.

“What's in it for you?" she questions.

"I will give you what you want, if you have lunch with me in the suite this week."

She takes a moment to answer. “What’s stopping me from going over there right now and just figuring out who it is on my own?”

“That’s a good question.” I figured she might try this. “I know Lev showed you the code for the building, so I had it changed. It’s no longer a simple four-digit code. It is now an eighteen-digit code with a fingerprint scanner. If you agree to the deal, I’ll give you the code and add your print to the system. Also, I figured you would want to deal with the other person locked up in there as well. I had medical patch him up after the beating Lev gave him the other night. So he will be ready for you.”

“Why would you do that for me? Why did Lev beat him up?”

“You’ll have to ask him that. As for me, I made you a promise; I plan to find out who sent that video if it’s the last thing I do. But, I also told you I would prove to you that I’m not a monster. To some people, I will always be a monster. To the people that live here, in this suite, that’s not who I want to be. I’m trying to show you who I am. Will you just let me show you? Will you at least let me try?”
