“It’s how I found out about Nevada.”

“You were still too late.”

“I won’t be too late this time around.”

“Meaning?”

“Dylan and I are making plans to visit Nevada the week after next to meet with the new MC among other things.”

“And is Jessie aware of this intended visit?”

“I haven’t spoken to her yet, so it’s unlikely. Dylan can’t let her know as she has his number blocked apparently.”

“I should let her know.”

“He may want to see her.”

“She may not want to see him.”

“I thought we were all wiping the slate clean. He’s getting wed.”

“To his cliché blonde, Eoin. A woman he’s been in love with for years. I’m not sure Jessie needs reminding of that fact, especially when he undertook a sexual relationship with her while already armed with this arranged marriage knowledge.”

There’s a lengthy pause. Something’s going on, and I want to know what that something goddamn is.

“Then I’ll leave it with you to let her know. Explain, please, that I’ll email her the finer details closer to the time. And to you too, of course.”

“Of course.” I immediately disconnect the call.

I take it back.

Even if we do try, it’s unlikely Eoin O’Connell and I willeverget along.

CHAPTERFIFTY-FOUR

DYLAN

Dylan’s Apartment, Hudson Yards, New York

Who knewtwo people could find so much to message about? I trawl through their exchanges. Not to be nosey. Just to familiarize myself with what they’ve been discussing recently, so I don’t drop the ball when I speak to our Paddy’s cliché blonde.

I frown at the lengthy communications between Jaine and him. Exchanges she thinks have been taking place between her and me. I’m not sure why I agreed to be party to all these lies.

Then I remember I did it all for my baby brother.

“Hello, Jaine.”

“Why, Dylan O’Connell. You have a voice.”

“I do.” I laugh.

“What’s happened? You never call. Is it something you can’t say in a message because big brother’s watching?”

“Has he admitted as much now?”

“He has. He says it’s for everyone’s protection, but he means the Dusters. The asshole doesn’t give a damn about me.”

“I can assure you that’s not the case, Jaine.”
