“It’s not your fault. Shit happens. I made the call, not you.”
“I’m also sorry about Little Bee. About what she did. I should have locked my systems down better. I guess I never thought she was paying attention when she looked over my shoulder all those times. Still, JAL is now as secure as Fort Knox as a result. History will never be repeated.”
“Good to know. It still doesn’t excuse what Bailey did.”
“Nope, it doesn’t. But she’s learned her lesson.”
“Let’s hope so.”
“On a positive, there’s one other piece of news. Well, it’s gossip, really. I overhead the employee with benefits, Candice, having a heated exchange with Eoin about it. I’m not sure if it was before or after they had desk sex.”
“This had better be good.”
“It is.”
“Well?”
“Rumor has it Prince Eoin is to be entered into an arranged marriage.”
She lets out a long whistle. “Well. Goddamn. That is good news. Karma. Finally.”
“Thought that would make you smile, partner.”
“Make me smile, Jessie? It’s made my day.”
CHAPTERFIVE
JAINE
Jaine’s House, Rising, California
I letthe phone ring out. Sitting on the old cream leather sofa, I mentally prepare myself to take his call. I already have the reasons why I can’t assist them with the IRS matter listed firmly in my head.
“Eoin.”
“Jaine.”
“I hear congratulations are in order.” I sound smug. I know I do.
There’s a pause.
“News travels fast. Not that anything’s been decided yet, Miss Jones.”
Good news or bad from where he’s standing, I wonder?
“So, we’re already back to Miss Jones. What’s wrong? Are you not happy with Ma and Da Duster’s selection for you? Such a shame. Karma can be a real bitch.”
Another pause. A lengthier one.
“On the contrary. Molly is from the old country, is extremely beautiful, and has a wealth of experience under her belt.”
“Really. And what is this wealth of experience she has? Or maybe I should just ask for a number. I’m guessing that’s what’s important. How many times she’s had to roll up her sleeves and muck in?”
“A lot more than you.”
“And you’d know that how?”
“You’re a lawyer.”
