“I have no owing.”
“I beg to differ. We’re owed as much over the Nevada incident as La eMe. Speaking of which, you also agreed to represent us on the alliance.”
“I did no such goddamn thing. I agreed to nothing.”
“Are you saying there’s no owing?”
“I defused the situation.”
“Yes, you did. And quite admirably too. But we need to ensure it doesn’t happen again. So, if you undertake that function, if we have to sign with JAL on that matter, then where’s the harm in you undertaking two roles for us?”
“I’ll think about it.”
“It’s urgent, Jaine.”
“Oh, because you want something we’re back to Jaine now, are we? IsaidI’ll think about it.”
“That’s exactly what you told Jessie.”
“Because that’s exactly what I’m doing. Goodbye, Eoin.”
* * *
Not five minuteslater my phone vibrates.
Padraig:Can you do me a huge favor, darlin?
Jaine:Depends on what it is, Dyl.
I know fine well what it is. Eoin has immediately called for backup. Manipulative asshole.
Padraig:Will you represent us legally on this IRS matter?
Jaine:Has Eoin asked you to ask me?
Padraig:Yes and no.
Jaine:Meaning?
Padraig:He’s told everyone you’ve said you’ll think about it.
Jaine:And I am.
Padraig:Jessie and Eoin are worried about it.
Jaine:I realize that.
Padraig:I’m worried about it too, darlin’.
Jaine:That’s a low blow, Dyl. Listen, aside from the reasons I’ve already given your big brother, I do have another reason for wanting to refuse. My IRS knowledge is limited. I’m in no way an expert on these matters. I’d like to try to source someone who has more experience under their belt if I can.
Padraig:The Dusters won’t use a third party they don’t already know.
Jaine:I understand that, but by all accounts, your da’s also not enthused at the thought of having to utilize my services.
Padraig:No, he’s not. I’m not going to lie to you. I’m not sure what’s going on there, but I know he thinks you’re already too heavily involved in our business.
Jaine:Hence the reason I’m trying to source a more well-rounded alternative.
