“That’s between your brother and me.”

Not removing his heavy glare, he picks up his phone and punches at the numbers. “Lix, someone in the office is asking to see you.” He pauses. “Okay.” He sets the phone down. “He’ll be here in a minute. Have a seat.” He waves at a chair.

“I’m fine,” I say between thinned lips.

The door opens. My heart jumps. That was quick. I peer over my shoulder. An attractive woman walks in.

“Hi!” Her eyes toggle between Brett and me.

“Hi!” I smile, watching Brett Daxon’s dark, seedy eyes become bright.

He smiles at the woman, and it reaches his eyes. So he found it. Her. The woman who ignites what was missing in that picture.

“Cassie, this is Luna Moon.” Brett waves his hand at me as he had at the chair earlier.

“Hi.” Cassie walks toward me. Her smile dithers. “Oh.” Her hand draws back, and her feet halt. “Luna Moon.”

The door opens again, and Lix comes through it. His blue heat circles the room, reading it for what it is—uncomfortable.

“Hey, Chosen.” He nudges his head my way.

“Lix,” I say, thankful for the interruption.

Brett Daxon looks like he wants to rip into me for my inquisition about the escort service. And while I’m not one to back down from any confrontation, he doesn’t know the whole story, and I’m not about to tell it.

“What’s up?” Lix advances in my direction, dragging his customary heat like a ball and chain. It lassos me up and around the back of my neck.

I grip my purse strap. “I stopped by to see if you wanted to do dinner?”

“When?”

I release the strap and grip tighter. “Tonight.”

“Can’t.” His blue orbs quickly scan me. “I’m busy. How about lunch?”

I flash to Cassie and Brett, both observing our interaction. Then I turn back to Lix. “When?”

“Now?” His eyebrow lifts.

“Okay.” I nod, ready to get the hell out of this office.

“Great. You met Brett and his girlfriend, Cassie.”

“It’s just Cassie. You don’t need to put a title in front of it.” Cassie sets a hand on her hip. “I’m a lot more than your brother’s girlfriend. I don’t know why men always do that.”

Lix chuckles. “Sorry, Cassie. You’re right. My bad.”

Cassie smiles at him, then at me. “Nice to meet you, Luna.”

“Actually,” Lix says, setting his hand on the small of my back. “It’s Chosen, Chosen Ashley. Luna Moon is the name she writes under.”

“Chosen.” Cassie nods with a small smile.

“Let’s go.” Lix’s palm presses deeper into my back as he escorts me out of the office.

“Where are we going?”

“To lunch.” He guides me to the back. “I thought I’d make it at my place.”
