Go inside or jump behind the wheel and make a run for it.

As soon as she heard the SUV start up, she’d be out of the cabin and after him. He wouldn’t be able to outrun her. Not with the Stiletto unsecured in the back of the vehicle. She was unpredictable. Who knew what she might do? What if she shot out the windows or door locks and took the drone.

He could not allow anything like that to happen.

He tossed the key fob into the bushes on the left side of the cabin. When she searched him, she wouldn’t find the fob.

Which might keep the Stiletto 100 from her clutches long enough.

Long enough for what, exactly?

He shrugged and then squared his shoulders and approached the cabin door, moving like a condemned man climbing the steps to the guillotine.

The rain came down hard and fast, puddling in the low-lying areas. Liam was completely soaked now. Even his underwear and socks were wet.

“Time to face the music,” he muttered as he reached out, turned the knob, and pushed the door open.

His eyes had adjusted to the dim outdoor light. Inside, the woman had lit a candle on the small table in the center of the room, which improved visibility.

She was seated in the only chair. Her posture was relaxed, even as she held the gun pointed directly toward him.

“Come in out of the rain. It’s cold out there,” she said in a fabulously sexy voice. The kind of voice any man notices, whether he’s interested or not.

Liam didn’t bother to feign surprise. She’d see through it if he tried any sort of subterfuge.

What did she want?

Saturday, June 4

Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario

Chang glanced at her high-tech watch and seemed surprised to notice the time. “I’ve got to run. Sorry. Gotta see a man about a horse. We can talk more later.”

Kim cocked her head and narrowed her eyes. “My dad used to say that when he didn’t want to tell us where he was going.”

“Smart man, your father,” Chang grinned. She holstered her gun, gathered her bag, and shrugged into a distressed brown leather bomber jacket.

Kim asked. “What if we need to find you?”

On her way to the door Chang replied, “Make yourselves comfortable. Catch some sleep. Stay as long as you like. The room’s rented for three more days.”

“You’re planning to be around that long?” Russell asked, frowning.

She shrugged again and kept moving.

Kim replied, “Leave me a contact number.”

Chang reached into her pocket and pulled out a business card. She tossed it on the table near the door.

She flipped the deadbolt and opened the door wide enough to slip through. A moment later she was gone.

Russell shook his head as the door closed solidly behind her. “What a load of crap.”

“Which part?”
