Emma’s brows rose.

“Harper,” he confirmed, even though that wasn’t her question. “She was a mess.”

Gosh, her friends, her readers—they all would have heard about it. Assuming her name had been released. Her parents would have told her closest friends.

“What were you going to do?” she asked.

Logan shrugged and let out a sharp laugh. “I don’t know. Fly and find you? Stupid, I know. All I wanted to do was help you. Get to you.”

Emma glanced at her water, and he handed it to her again. This time, she held it and took a few sips.

“Logan—”

“Don’t. I...Emma, I know you overheard what I said to Daniel. Why else would you leave?” he said, shaking his head. “I was a fucking idiot.”

So, he did know.

Emma felt ashamed. If she hadn’t run away like a coward, she wouldn’t be lying in this hospital bed.

“It doesn’t matter now,” Emma said. “I could have confronted you. Or simply told you I didn’t want to continue seeing you. Disappearing like that was childish. And clearly not my best life decision.”

Logan stared at her for a long moment.

She wished she could read his mind. Emma bet he was an excellent poker player.

“I understand why you left. It was a shitty thing to hear. But I want the opportunity to explain myself.”

Emma shook her head.

“It’s not necessary, Logan. I shouldn’t have reacted. It was more about me than you. No, it was all about me. My mother...I told you. Her words hurt me. So, you triggered me.”

Logan leaned closer and picked up one of her hands.

“Is that really all it was? Because I have to tell you, sweetheart, my reaction to you leaving was stronger than I was expecting. I was already fighting the desire to fly to fucking Chicago and kick your ass before hearing about the plane going down.”

Emma flinched.

“Sorry,” Logan said.

The reminder of the crash had her heart thumping in her chest. Or was it the thought of Logan following her across the country?

“It’s fine. I’m okay. But hey, I must be good in bed if you were going to chase me,” she said, her throat going dry again.

“Or we both are.” Logan nudged her drink to her lips.

“Your ego knows no bounds.” Emma giggled and then coughed.

“God, I’ve missed you.” Logan cupped her face.

She felt her eyes fill. “I’m so confused. What is this, Logan? I thought we were just sleeping together.”

Logan nodded. “So did I.”

“What about your board?” Emma asked.

He sighed. “I don’t know. It’s complicated. I won’t lie and say it’s not still an issue. It is. But never seeing you again is not something I’m willing to do.”

Holy shit.
