Logan just...before she could finish typing, Harper had started calling.
“Hey.”
“What did that big brute do?” Harper’s fierce voice came through the phone.
Emma let out a sigh. “Heisa big brute. We shagged without a condom, and he’s mad at me because the doctors said my pill was likely not effective. That’s all my fault, apparently.”
“But he shoved in without protection?”
“Yes. But we both just didn’t...Well, you know. One of those moments.”
“Which he’s fifty percent responsible for,” Harper stated. “He’s freaking out.”
So was she.
And mostly because of his completely unfair reaction.
“I’m not happy about it either. But his reaction was over the top, Harp. He’s been so gentle and caring until now,” Emma said.
They both went quiet for a moment, then Harper said, “Well, just go to the pharmacy and get the pill. Whatever you call it here in the U.S...In New Zealand, we call it the morning-after pill.”
Emma smiled at the kiwi term. “We call it that too. And yeah, I will.”
She heard the front door close and a car start outside. Jumping up, she saw Logan climbing into it and driving away.
Where was he going?
What was clear was that Emma needed to go home. She’d opened her heart to him tonight, and what had he done? Fucked her.
He hadn’t said it back, and when he thought she might fall pregnant, Logan lost his goddamn mind.
Do you want to bring an unwanted child into this world?
Those weren’t the words of a man who had feelings for her. Even if he didn’t want to be a father. They were cruel and thoughtless.
And hurtful.
“Are you falling in love with Logan, Em?” Harper said.
A tear slid out, and she wiped it away again. “I think so. Stupid, I know.”
“It’s not stupid. He flew you across the country so he could look after you,” Harper said. “I know he was hurt when his ex-wife cheated on him, but perhaps there’s more to it. Maybe she wanted kids, and he didn’t. There has to be some history for him to overreact like this.”
Emma tucked her hand under her head, the glow of the phone lighting up her face.
“You are probably right. I’m just so sensitive right now. The crash has completely messed with my equilibrium in life.”
“Babe. That’s so understandable. Don’t be hard on yourself, and if he keeps being an ass, let me know, and I’ll fly out and get you.”
Emma smiled.
Having friends with private jets was pretty handy.
“Thank you, Harper. You have the biggest heart.” Emma sniffed.
“It’s called a big bank account,” Harper said, and they both giggled. “Go to sleep and see how things are in the morning,” Harper added.
After hanging up, Emma turned off her phone and lay in the dark for what felt like hours before Logan returned and climbed into bed. It took him about five long minutes before he pulled her into his arms and whispered, “I’m so fucking sorry.”
