I smile at and rise to my tiptoes to kiss his cheek. “Yes, Dad, I will.”

I glance at Carter one more time, trying my best to memorize him just as he is right now, and then I turn and walk away, leaving the two men I love most staring after me.

I hope I’m making the right choice for everyone, because it sure doesn’t feel right. I guess rather than making the right choice, I’m making the only choice that’s available to me. To us.

I hope time might mend my broken heart and set right the wrongs Carter and I unknowingly caused. I hope Kate gets better and I hope Helen will one day retrieve the smile I’ve always loved. I hope Carter will eventually be happy, and I hope a little part of him will always love me.

Hope. It’s all I’ve got left.

Afterword

Emilia and Carter’s story isn’t over yet. Theirs is a trilogy that has so far followed them through their childhood and teenage years. The last book will follow them through adulthood.

Their story was never going to be easy — but their love is enduring, and I can’t wait to see them together again.

They’ll meet again as adults, and their happily ever after will be all the sweeter because of everything they’ve gone through.
