She nodded. “Um, sure, I’ll assign him some tasks right now.”

It was petty. Too petty. But it ensured that at least he would be late for their date. If calling off the date wasn’t in my control, sabotaging it could be still possible.

I couldn’t help but make a stop at Kathy’s workstation. I hadn’t seen her all day, despite her being the only thing on my mind all morning.

“Can I help you?”

I realized that I had just been standing over at her desk, staring.

“Did something happen to your phone?” I asked, pointedly.

She shook her head, pulling out her cellphone in front of her.

“Nope. Works perfectly fine,” she pressed the button on the side and lit the screen bright to show me.

“Then why didn’t you respond to my texts?” I said, lowering my voice slightly to prevent anyone but her from hearing it.

“I have decided to keep our communications strictly about work from now on,” she explained. “No more talking about personal stuff.”

“Is that what you’re going to do now?”

“Yes,” she shrugged. “After all, isn’t it company policy to do that?”

“It is,” I said, the bitterness from earlier returning to my voice. “That applies to your date, too.”

A small smile appeared on Kathy’s lips, but she hid it away quickly.

“You heard about that?”

“Of course, I did,” I said through flared nostrils. “Kevin has been announcing it to everyone like a bumbling idiot.”

“Well, that just shows that he’s excited to go out with me,” she shrugged.

Something told me that she was enjoying herself seeing me like this. As neutral as I tried to keep my expression, it was hard not to get flustered when I discussed her about Kevin.

“Or he just cannot believe that you said yes,” I rolled my eyes. “Honestly, I can’t either. Was kissing him not enough to put you off?”

Kathy gasped, looking around to see if anyone else had overheard. Luckily, there was no one around.

“You know about that too?”

At least she didn’t seem proud of the fact that she had kissed Kevin.

“Yes, and I’m sure so does everyone else,” I replied. “He is the type to kiss and tell.”

“As I said, it just shows that he’s excited,” she replied. “He doesn’t want to hide the fact that he likes me. Unlike you.”

That hurt. I composed myself, not wanting to let her see that her stabbing words had influenced me in any way.

“Besides, why do you care so much anyway?” she continued. “It’s not like you were interested in dating me. So now, don’t act all jealous about another man who has decided to do just that.”

“I was simply stating some facts to you,” I said flatly, even though her words had stung. “It has nothing to do with jealousy.”

“Are you sure?” she beckoned.

“Yes. As a matter of fact, it’s the least of my worries. I feel bad for you if anything. Not jealous,” I said.

Kathy’s face fell. She nodded and then turned her attention back to her work.
