Even now in the night, when everyone was sleeping, and I had settled in the living room to work, my thoughts circled that sight. I heard shuffling steps and looked up. Brianna wore a loose nightgown that fell just above her cute buttocks to the middle of her thighs. She went to the refrigerator and opened it. I had to grin when she leaned a little forward to look deeper into it, presenting me with a particularly nice view of her backside.
She shoved something into her mouth, grabbed the orange juice bottle in the refrigerator door, and turned around. »What the hell!« she exclaimed as she saw me. She almost dropped the bottle from shock. I closed the laptop and had to admit, it wasn’t entirely fair that I was sitting in a dark corner and hadn’t immediately said anything. »Why are you lurking around people here?«
I had to laugh. »I’m not lurking around anyone. I’m working.«
»Okay, that’s even crazier.« She grabbed a muffin that was on the counter and came to me. With a swing, she dropped onto the couch next to the chair I was sitting on. »Why are you working at two in the morning on a weekend instead of sleeping?«
»For one thing, I like to work at night because it’s quiet,« I replied.
»And for another thing, you didn’t know that Elliot snores so extremely, right?« A mischievous grin spread across Bri’s face.
»Correct. The second point should not be neglected.«
She held out the muffin to me. »Do you want some? Or don’t your abs allow it?«
I took the muffin from her fingers and bit a huge chunk off before holding the rest to her. »My abs work for me, not me for them.«
»Oh wow, a real Chuck Norris quote.«
Once again, she made me laugh. Not only did I have several faces. The Bri sitting next to me now was particularly likable. »Better not say anything against Chuck Norris, he can hear you,« I whispered.
»He could make sure Elliot is quiet. I can hear his snoring through the walls.« She rolled her eyes and wrapped her arms around her bent legs. For a moment, her soft, bare skin distracted me from everything else. »There was a reason why he had his room in the basement.«
»I thought it was because he had his peace down there.«
»He told you that, didn’t he? Sure, it was the other way around. So we could have peace from him.«
There was a moment of silence, and I knew she was thinking about the old times, just like me. »You know he adores you, right, Bri?«
She hesitated. »He loves me, sure, I’m his sister, but I was always a burden. To both of you.«
»That’s not true. You were the one we had to defend the most.«
»What do you mean?«
»In reality, Elliot has a pretty long fuse. Only when it came to you, he would fight.« I leaned slightly towards her. »And I was the same.«
»You guys were always fighting,« she stated quietly.
»Exactly. Did you know that Sam Jenkins didn’t say anything bad about you? On the contrary, he wanted to invite you to the winter ball.«
»What?« she asked in surprise. »He wanted to invite me? Sam Jenkins?«
»I couldn’t bear the thought of you possibly getting together with him.«
»But you ... that ... are you crazy?« she asked loudly. I shrugged innocently. »Is that why I barely had any dates?«
»I was a teenager, I didn’t know how to handle such things. I’m sorry,« I apologized weakly. »Telling you I wanted you, just before I moved away, was a jerk move, I’m sorry. But it had to come out before I might never see you again.«
»You wanted me?«
»Bri,« I cautioned. »Of course, otherwise I wouldn’t have kissed you.«
»You’ve kissed hundreds of girls,« she retorted.
»I had to practice for you.«
Laughter bubbled out of her, and she punched me in the shoulder. I loved these moments with her. Not just the heated ones, but especially these. »Idiot! Don’t talk nonsense!«
