She smiles and I can see the blush on her cheeks from the compliment.
“I’ve been messing about with it for years. When King had me checking CCTV footage, I started to learn more about it. I was able to hack into the District’s footage through a file Carlo had and I just kept playing about with it. You can track number plates, mobile phones, bounce off satellite towers to get a signal that connects to cameras to do facial recognition. Honestly, it’s super fucking cool.” She continues to tap away and even though I knew Carlo had access to all of this, it’s entirely different watching my girl do it.
“I really want to fuck you right now,” I confess, adjusting the bulge in my jeans.
“No time.” She stands, kissing me on the lips quickly. “There’s our car.” She points to the screen and I put the address into my phone, jumping into the Cadillac and peeling it out of the driveway.
We drove for almost three hours before finally reaching the Third District. Rori fidgets in her seat and every now and then she breaks the silence, questioning why we’re here. What does the Third District have to do with this? Is it Edison, the Third District’s leader? Have we been betrayed? I never answer, knowing she’s just trying to make sense of it all. But I have all the same questions.
We have never had any trouble with the Third District and since Carlo was killed, these past few months have shown nothing but peace between us and them. Kennedy Harlow, Theo’s dad, caused problems for a while, insinuating he wanted to help rule the First District as well as the second, but Edison and Casper always said they wanted no trouble.
Finally, I pull to a stop at the car we’ve been tracking and the first thing I notice is it’s been abandoned. The doors are flung open and there’s no sign of anyone. I look around the industrial estate of empty warehouses and run my hands through my hair when I notice more tyre tracks further ahead.
We follow them on foot so we don’t alert anyone to our presence with the sound of the engine and eventually, the tracks stop again, another car abandoned where they end. I look through the car but find no sign of anything and Rori meets my eye when I stand up straight.
“We’re going to have to search them all,” I say quietly, pointing to all the warehouses, already cursing at how long this could take before we find them.
Rori nods and pulls the gun out of her holster and again, I wish I could fuck her on the bonnet of this car. But my cousin's life is at stake again, so that’s gonna have to wait.
After what feels like hours of searching through abandoned buildings and no hope, I start to stress. King and Theo have been gone for roughly six hours now and if we don’t find them soon, I’m worried we’ll find them dead.
We push our way through another door and I shield Rori against a wall when a gunshot rings out from below us. I communicate with her through my eyes and she understands. This is it, and we have no idea what we’re going to find, but we’ll fucking do it together.
Traipsing slowly through the warehouse, we turn a corner and are faced with two guards. They lift their guns up to us but not quick enough, because we both jolt forward and knock them out of their hands. I throw a left hook to the guy's jaw and kick his kneecaps out from underneath him. He falls like a sack of shit and I pick up his gun and slam it into his head, enough for him to pass out.
I turn to look at Rori and see her throw a jab into the guy's throat. He’s momentarily winded, his hands going to his neck as he gasps for breath. But my girl, who’s trained for years and years, doesn't hesitate. She dives behind him, pulling both of his arms away from his neck, twisting them awkwardly to his back and kicking behind his knees so he drops. Keeping hold of his arms with one hand, she uses the other to pull his head back by his hair and then slams it into the wall opposite, knocking him out cold too.
Fuck.
I can feel my dick getting hard and when she stands to her full height, turning around to face me, panting and sweating, I want nothing more than to fuck her up against the wall with the two useless bodies at our feet.
“No time,” she whispers, reading my thoughts and then stepping over the guy I took down. She comes to the top of some stairs and goes down them one step at a time, me hot on her heels. We’re waiting outside a door to a basement, straining our ears to hear anything, when King’s and Theo’s voices speak out, which makes me sigh in relief. But there are two other voices that I vaguely recognise but cannot place.
“You might hate to admit it, boy, but you’re a lot like me. Falling for the girl who shouldn’t be yours,” the voice says and I scrunch my brows together, trying to make sense of it all.
“She is mine,” King shoots back.
“She might have been once.”
I grip my gun tighter in my hands, lifting it into position, and Rori does the same. I place my hand on the door handle, ready to burst through, when the voice says a name that stops me.
“Edison.”
There’s shuffling and mumbling, whimpers and cries, and Rori’s eyes flame. I know she wants to burst in there and cause havoc, but we need to plan it right so that none of us end up dead.
In the smallest of whispers, I lean into Rori’s ear.
“We wait until he’s vulnerable. We need his guard to be down so we can then go in and distract him. I’ll handle Edison. You take Casper.”
I have no idea why Edison and Casper have King and Theo, but I’ll be damned if anyone takes away my family from me again.
“GET THE FUCK OFF ME!” Theo shouts, and I look to Rori to nod, but she’s already moved and pushed through the door.
The heavy door slams against the wall and all heads turn towards us for a second before Theo throws an uppercut to Casper, who’s kneeling in front of her, and then launches herself into him, chair and all. Edison lunges for Rori, but she throws a punch hard enough to startle him.
“Go and untie King,” I shout, stepping in front of her before beating the shit out of Edison. He gives me a good fight back, but I use my gun to knock him out cold and he falls to my feet, unconscious.
“Oi, cunt!” I hear Rori shout and look up to see her standing in front of Casper and Theo. King has just jumped up from the chair, ready to run to Theo’s aid, when I put an arm out in front to stop him.
