I hold back, hidden between two buildings, too far to hear what they’re saying, when the mystery girl with the silver hair follows Sophie inside. So she must know her. Interesting.
I may just have to wait it out and see what other questions this girl raises.
* * *
It’s been almosttwelve hours since I saw the silver-haired stranger floating like a swan in the lake on the outskirts of the First District and since following her to SSC, I’m nursing yet another glass of vodka and watching her work hard, collecting drink orders and empty glasses.
I’ve been here many times and have a good friendship with Sophie, but I’ve never seenherhere before.
From my position at the back of the bar, I’ve been watching her all night. She hasn’t looked my way once and I feel irritated that she hasn’t noticed me when I noticed her straight away. Her silver hair, her slim frame, how she gulps down every glass of water she can get her hands on.
I just sit here, watching and waiting, for what I don’t know. I watch her walking around collecting glasses, offering small smiles to some of the customers as she passes their tables.
My gaze follows her across the room when my eyes land on a booth situated closer to the stage and I ball my hands into fists. I’ve been trying to get a hold of Lenny for weeks with no luck, to get any intel on King and Puck, and the bastard has been around, hanging in strip clubs?
Lenny lives in the Third District and is literally a nobody to everyone who doesn’t know him. But those who know him well, know he has an incredible ability to hack and find out information that might be long buried. That’s why I need him.
I stand, and with one hand I button up my navy blazer and down the rest of my drink smoothly with the other. I look for the girl and find her behind the bar devouring another tall glass of water and nod in contentment that I know where she is.
I make my way over to the booth slowly, one hand resting casually in my pocket, and I make sure she notices me. She can’t ignore me now.
Her eyes find me over the rim of the glass and I hold in the smile that wants to slip out. Finally, my little swan has her eyes on me.
Approaching the table, I stand in front of Lenny and clear my throat, and he sits up a little straighter in his chair.
“Dax,” he says, choking slightly on my name, his eyes tightening as he says it out loud.
“You haven’t forgotten about me then?” I reply calmly.
“Dude, I’ve been busy.”
“Busy? You haven’t been busy. Don’t give me that bullshit. Where the fuck have you been?”
Lenny spiels off a whole speech I don’t listen to. I can hear his words, but all I can feel isherpresence from over at the bar. She’s watching me, finally.
“I don’t give a fuck,” I cut in, stepping closer and brushing a hand through my hair to keep it busy so I don’t knock the fucker out. “You will answer when I call you and you will get the information I need.”
I don’t give him time to nod or respond as I turn and walk away, heading towards the back exit. I need to leave and get my anger in check before I start something. Pushing the heavy exit door open, I pause and take a deep breath in, hating the thought of walking out of here without seeing her face again.
I look over my shoulder and my eyes find hers instantly, burning a fire so deep in my soul I almost turn around and take her here and now. Her cheeks blush a light pink, but she never falters her gaze. Good girl.
I turn around and head out the door into the dark night, letting the it slam shut loudly behind me. I look up and down the small alley and hit my palm against the brick wall, letting some of my anger surface whilst I’m alone.
Lenny has fucked me off being here, ignoring me for so long when I need answers. And her. She’s taken away my focus for a whole day, but I can’t stop thinking about her. Fuck, I don’t even know her and I’ve just been stalking the poor girl with her none the wiser.
I close my eyes and rest my forehead on the cold bricks and take a few deep breaths in, trying to calm myself down.
My life is going to shit.
Pushing myself away, I head up the alleyway and decide to make my way back to the mansion. It’s been a long day and a complete distraction, but now I need to focus on finding King and Puck.
As I make my way round the corner of the alley, I hear the door open and close, and I almost stumble over my feet running back to see if it was her and if she’s followed me. It is her, but she is just taking the bin bags out. I really need to get a grip on myself.
I stand and watch her from the shadows at the end of the alley, when no other than fucking Lenny follows her out the same door and approaches her.
My blood is boiling and as soon as his hands are on her, I lose all reason. I make my way back down the dark alleyway, ready to pound this motherfucker’s head in, when the girl starts crying louder and his hands aren’t letting up.
Her cries flip a switch in me. I want to do everything I can to never hear her make that sound again. And so I do the only reasonable thing I can to save her.
