“Spencer needed all of his brothers?”

“He just texted me that he’s coming home a bit later from his tennis session. I don’t know the details. He wouldn't tell me everything that happened, so I couldn't give advice, but I think it did him good to speak to his brothers. Darling girl, do you want to talk about it?"

I smiled. It felt a bit wobbly. "Yes, please, if it doesn't bother you. I mean, Spencer is your grandson. I only spoke about it to Taylor, and I didn't want to worry my mom about it."

Besides, I knew what my mom would say—that I shouldn't chase a man, but that wasn't the case here. I respected that Mom had her own opinion about relationships. If I'd suffered as many heartbreaks as she had, I'd probably feel the same.

"How much do you know?"

"Oh, everything. Gabe called me earlier when they moved from Nick’s gym to the distillery. He always checks on me on Sunday. Anyway, one thing led to another... and Gabe is very easy to question.”

Her explanation prompted me to laugh, but I stopped abruptly because Ben had fallen asleep on my chest. I loved cuddling him. "Do you think I'm wrong for following my heart? I love Spencer and Ben."

She smiled widely. "Not one bit. As a rule of thumb in life, I think the only time one shouldn't follow their heart is if they’ll hurt someone else in the process." Her eyes clouded. "But other than that, I think that our heart and instincts are deeply connected. Does it lead us into trouble sometimes? Sure. I'm not saying it wouldn't be better to avoid headaches, but life is full of ups and downs. Through it all, listening to that inner voice is what keeps us on the right path."

I gathered the courage to ask her something I'd been fearing deep down. "You think things between Spencer and I are moving too fast?"

"I come from a different generation, but I was certain that I wanted Abe to be my husband almost immediately. Things moved very fast for us. And I wouldn't change one thing. I don't believe in all this nonsense of being together for years before deciding if the other person is the one. I don't know why youngsters these days are so undecided. But that's become the norm, so when someone makes up their mind fast, it seems strange to everyone else. Here is my advice to you: don't ignore what your heart and inner voice say to you. It will be the best guide you can ever get."

"Thank you, Jeannie. I think I really needed to hear that."

"So... if I might be nosy."

"You may," I said.

"What does it tell you?

"That I love Ben and Spencer to the moon and back. Nothing will change that. I didn't think I was ready for this kind of love, at least not this fast, but I am. I'm completely and utterly prepared to love both of them forever."

"You're a great woman. I couldn't have wished for anyone better for my grandson.”

A sound outside the door startled us both.

"I think Spencer is back," Jeannie said.

I tensed. Ben began to fuss in my arms, but I kissed the top of his head, and he immediately relaxed. When Spencer stepped inside, my breath caught.

"Hi, Grandmother. Hi, Penny." He lowered his eyes to Ben, who was now giggly, moving his nose and lips over my chest.

"Hey! I just came to say hi to your grandmother and to cuddle this little guy."

"Right. You know what? Cal's going to come in a few minutes to pick me up," Jeannie said. "And I'm not nearly done with this cutie. Do you mind if I take him with me tonight?" She glanced between me and Spencer. Her intention was clear. She wanted to give us space. "I feel very alert," Jeannie went on.

Spencer narrowed his eyes, considering this for a few seconds. "I‘ll message Agatha to come straight to your house.”

“Oh! You think she’ll be available?” Jeannie asked.

“Yes. I asked her to be on call for us a while ago.”

“I’m sure Abe and I can handle the little one for the night,” Jeannie continued.

“Nah, I’ll feel better if Agatha is there too.”

Jeannie pouted as Spencer sent a text message. His phone pinged.

“She’ll be at your house in one hour.”

“Okay,” Jeannie said.
