Pola’s heart skipped a beat. Her bear was impatiently pacing back and forth inside her.
What is it?she asked her beast. Sweat beaded on Pola’s forehead. She already had a sense of what her animal was going to say.
Mate, her animal replied.
Pola swallowed hard. The scent of Shekita was becoming overwhelming. Her gums burned from her fangs pressing against them, demanding to descend.
“Did you hear me?” Saffron asked.
Pola blinked, focusing on her friend. She barked a laugh and sipped her drink again.
“I said, me and Dasha are going to snag a table. I’m hungry and will be ordering food.” Saffron patted her stomach.
Dasha dropped a kiss on Saffron’s shoulder and took her by her hand and led her away.
Pola’s attention was snagged by Shekita who remained at her side. The woman sidled closer to her due to a few rambunctious guys stealing Pola and Dasha’s spot.
“I’m sorry.” Shekita laughed.
They were now pressed against each other. The woman was much smaller than Pola’s six-foot frame. The top of her head stopped below Pola’s chin. Pola bit back a groan at the feeling of Shekita’s soft breasts pushing against her side. She was hit with Shekita’s scent even stronger. The urge to grab her by the hand and lead her out of the bar was growing.
“Don’t worry about it. I actually don’t mind.” Pola found her arm boldly snaking around Shekita’s waist to anchor her to her. Her sweet, flowery scent was enveloping Pola, drawing her to her. She dipped her head down, her lips stopping at the shell of Shekita’s ear. “You smell wonderful.”
“Ha! I’m glad you think so. I just got off work and tried my best to freshen up before I came.” Shekita’s lips tilted in a sexy grin.
Thank goodness for Pola’s shifter hearing. Had she been human, she wouldn’t have heard her.
“Do you live in Lurton?” Pola asked. The town was small, but it wasn’t like Pola knew everyone. Someone like Shekita, she would have taken notice of her.
“No, I don’t. I live in Black Fish.”
The town she’d named wasn’t too far of a drive from Lurton. It would explain why they had never run into each other. Pola’s mind raced with the logistics of going back and forth from Lurton to Black Fish.
Slow down, girl. She inhaled. She would have to figure out if Shekita would be into her. Humans weren’t like shifters, they didn’t recognize their mates from their internal animals. For humans, it was different. Pola grew slightly frustrated at the notion that she couldn’t follow her basic instincts and claim her mate. She would have to ensure that Shekita fell for her before adorning her with a claiming bite.
“Are you here by yourself?” Pola asked.
She tightened her grip on Shekita, taking notice that the woman wasn’t pulling away from her. If anything, she leaned farther into Pola’s embrace. For her to work in construction, Pola would have guessed she would be riddled with hard muscles, but there was a softness to her hips, stomach, and those full breasts of hers. Shekita may be a contractor, but she was definitely all woman. It was as if she were an oxymoron, and Pola was already in love with her body.
“Some of the guys from my crew are here, too. We needed to release some stress.” Shekita tilted her head back. Her small, blunt white teeth snagged her plump bottom lip.
Pola stared at it, wishing it was her teeth nibbling on Shekita’s lip.
Take her,her bear growled.
Stand down,Pola growled back. What did her bear want her to do? Lift Shekita onto the bar and claim her?
Her bear had the nerve to release a snort.
The music changed, and Shekita glanced over at the dance floor. Her body swayed to the beat of the song. It was a popular one by a country singer wailing about love being found in a field of daisies. Shekita’s eyes fluttered shut for a moment, then they opened and focused on her.
“Please tell me you like to dance,” Shekita said. Those teeth were on her bottom lip again.
Pola held back a growl, wanting to press her lips to Shekita’s so she could run her tongue along them.
“I sure do.” She snatched her drink from the counter and knocked it back. The cool burn of the alcohol slithered down her throat. She took Shekita by the hand and led her away toward the dance floor.
Shekita’s body was pressed closed to hers. She gripped Pola’s arm with both her hands as they maneuvered their way through the throng of people.
