“It’s okay, my love,” Pola murmured. She pressed a kiss to Shekita’s forehead and gave her another squeeze.
“But is your shoulder all right? I keep seeing the knife sticking out of it,” Shekita said. She reached up and wiped her cheeks with the back of her hand.
“I’m good as new with my shift.” Pola rotated her shoulder and only felt a twinge of pain. It would be completely gone by morning.
“I’ll need the both of you to meet us down at the station for an official statement,” Officer Brady said. He turned to Nick. “I’m sure you will want to be present for this.”
“Of course. All members of the clan must be accompanied by an enforcer or clan leaders,” Nick said. He took Officer Brady’s hand in a firm shake.
The officer nodded to Shekita and Pola, walking away.
Once he was out of earshot, Nick turned to them. “Are you sure she didn’t hurt you?”
“The knife didn’t go that far in.” Pola shrugged.
Sega returned to them, joining in the conversation. “That woman is crazy.” He shook his head. He towered over all of them. It was a wonder someone his size could move as fast as he could. “We need to go down to the police station?”
“Yeah. The girls will need to go down there to give a statement,” Nick shared.
“Will I have time to run and get some clothes? I don’t have anything extra with me,” Pola asked. As a shifter, she didn’t have a problem walking around naked, but humans always had issues with naked shifters.
“We’ll escort you home and then down to the station,” Nick said.
“I’ll alert the alpha to what is going on.” Sega pulled his phone from his jeans and stepped away.
“Stay here. I’ll go get my truck, and we’ll ride together.” Nick backed away, turned on his heel, and jogged down the street.
Pola blew out a deep breath and faced her mate. She reached up and cupped Shekita’s face.
“She didn’t hurt you, did she?” Pola asked.
“No, you came just in time.” Shekita’s eyes watered again with unshed tears. She rested her hand on Pola’s. A small smile appeared on her lips. “I love you so much.”
Pola’s heart stuttered. She froze, unsure she’d heard her mate correctly.
“What did you say?” she asked softly.
“I love you, Pola Pride. I was going to tell you later, but now seemed the best time to do it. My heart beats for you, and there is no other person I would rather be with in this world but you.”
“Oh, I love you, too,” Pola breathed. She gathered Shekita to her and wrapped her up tight in her embrace. She had searched her entire life for the person who she would share her life with. The fates knew exactly who she needed in her life, and they never made mistakes. Shekita was perfect for her. “I will always be here to protect you and love you.”
Neither of them paid attention to the craziness that was going on around them. Pola had eyes for only Shekita. This woman was her entire world, and she would go up against one thousand Bobbies to keep Shekita safe. Her bear snorted in agreement.
Shekita belonged to her and her bear.
Fate had given this woman to her, and she had claimed her.
No one would ever take her away.
Epilogue
Shekita stretched her limbs out as far as they could reach. She sighed, loving the feeling of the warmth of the sun. She and her mate were enjoying their beautiful Saturday afternoon. Shekita had packed them a nice lunch, and they had set off into the woods so Pola could let her bear out. Shekita might have overdone it on the food, but she didn’t care. They could take the rest home and have it for dinner later.
While her mate was off doing her bear thing, she had planned to read a good book. She had picked up a new thriller from the local bookstore. Shekita rolled over onto her stomach and opened the book.
Life couldn’t get any better.
It had been three months since the altercation with Bobbie. She had been arrested and charged with assault with a deadly weapon. She was currently awaiting her trial in a jail cell. There was enough evidence stacked against her. It was going to be a long time before she breathed an ounce of freedom.
