“She’s mine.” Bobbie laughed.

She brought her knee up, but Pola was quicker, turning away. The knee landed on the outer part of her thigh.

“Do you think she would really want someone like you? A shifter?”

Bobbie used her knee, and this time, Pola didn’t block her. Pain exploded between Pola’s legs. She gasped, letting go of Bobbie’s wrist. She staggered backward, inhaling sharply. The pain was overwhelming but fading fast.

“I do want her,” Shekita snapped. She raced to Pola’s side and slipped an arm around her waist.

Pola stood to her full height and wrapped an arm around her shoulder and turned. She wasn’t much of a fighter in her human form. As long as her mate was safe, that was all that mattered.

“Leave us be.”

Pola swiveled Shekita around and took a few steps away, crying out.

A burning sensation sank deep into the muscle of her shoulder. She spun around, fear escaping her.

The crazed woman had sunk her knife into Pola’s shoulder blade.

“Don’t turn your back on me!” Bobbie hollered. “Fight me like a woman.”

Pola’s bear no longer took no for an answer. Her fangs pushed forth through her gums and descended. Her dark-brown fur sprouted out onto her flesh. Her bear broke free. Her clothes fell to the ground in a pile of tattered remains. The knife that was once in her shoulder landed on the sidewalk.

Shekita reversed, and the scent of fear permeated the air.

Pola stood to her full height and threw her head back and let loose a mighty roar.

The thought that her mate was afraid of her pissed off her animal even more. If the dumb bitch had just left them alone, she wouldn’t have had to shift into her bear to protect her woman. She inhaled again and this time she noticed that the stink of fear she was scenting was not that of her mate. Shekita’s eyes were wide as she stepped away. Pola swung around and faced Bobbie who stood before her with her mouth agape.

“Holy shit,” Bobbie muttered. Her body jerked into movement as if she were just regaining control of it. She backed off with her palms up, facing Pola. “You can have her.”

Pola fell to all fours, baring her fangs. Screams went around from the pedestrians trying to get to safety. The scene turned into a melee. Men, women, and children were now running. The screeching of tires filled the air. Pola was sure she made one hell of a sight. It wasn’t often there was a bear in the middle of a busy shopping district.

So it had taken her shifting for this idiot of a woman to get that she needed to leave Shekita alone.

“I’ll walk away from her. You can have the bitch,” Bobbie said.

Pola advanced on her, following her as she scrambled around her truck. The color escaped her face, leaving her pale.

“Pola! No!” a deep male voice shouted from behind her, but her bear ignored it.

The lowlife before her had hurt her woman. She didn’t deserve to walk off. Pola’s bear was pushing for full control.

It was taking everything Pola had to keep some form of control between the two of them. Usually, she stayed in control even when in bear form, but at the moment, her bear was furious. She wanted to exact revenge for all of the times Bobbie had hurt their mate.

During their five days of being locked indoors with each other during their fever, Shekita had come clean about Bobbie. She’d shared everything about her prior relationship with this female, and most of it was not good. This woman had hurt their mate. Physically and mentally. She didn’t deserve to even look at Shekita.

“Pola! Stop.” A male threw himself in front of her.

She blinked and took in Nick glaring at her. She reached out a hand and held her gaze. She brandished her fangs. Her bear recognized him but didn’t want to harm him. He wasn’t her target.

“Don’t do this,” he said.

The sound of sirens echoed around them. Pola took in the arrival of the human police. The cops flew out of their cars, brandishing their weapons.

“Don’t shoot her!” Shekita raced forward and dove in front of her.

Pola snarled at the thought of her mate in the line of fire from the police. If the police shot her, the bullets wouldn’t do anything but piss her bear off even more.
