‘Señorita.’

There was another guard, and he’d been clearly warned to stop her, but although that would once have terrified her, it actually reassured her.

They wanted her gone! But the Alejandro she knew would not hide in New York hoping she’d leave. If they were over, he’d have told her so.

She knew that about him, at least.

‘Señorita!’the guard shouted.

‘I need to speak with Sebastián,’ Emily said, her heels ringing out as she took the stairs, wondering if she was about to be tackled, terrified she might be risking the baby.

But then she heard Sebastián’s voice.

‘It’s fine.’ He stood calmly at the top of the stairs, peering down and making her feel more dishevelled and inconvenient than ever. ‘Come up, Miss Jacobs.’

Emily did so—slowly. Not really knowing what to say or do once she got there...just knowing she wasn’t ready to leave.

Knowing, more importantly, that Alejandro would never subject her to this.

Sebastián’s office looked out across theplaza. It was incredibly imposing, with an iron staircase in the centre, which Emily knew led to the rooftop terrace where those romantic images of him had been taken.

The smiling man in those photos was not the one she faced now.

‘What can I do for you?’ he asked.

‘I have some things I’d like to discuss with Alejandro.’ She took a breath to steady her voice. ‘Is it possible to have his contact number?’

‘No.’ He was blunt.

‘Well, is it possible that you can contact him and give him mine?’

‘I’m sure Sophia has all your details. I’ll ask her to pass them on. But right now I believe she’s a little busy giving birth.’

‘Can you call him for me, please?’

‘Emily.’ He came around the desk. ‘I’m sure if Alejandro wants to contact you, then he will.’

‘Well, I am not leaving Jerez until I’ve spoken to him.’ Her voice was starting to rise.

‘You are making a fool of yourself.’

‘No!’ Emily retorted. ‘Youare being incredibly rude!’

There were tears in her eyes, but not of embarrassment, more of frustration.

‘Your brother has manners, and as well as that he has guts, and if he wanted me gone then he’d have said so himself. If you don’t give me his number then I’ll—’

She never got to finish.

‘You bastard!’

It was Alejandro, crashing through the door. An Alejandro she almost didn’t recognise, because he was angry and menacing as he sped across the room.

‘All this crap about wanting to see our father for yourself...’

He was furious, and for a moment she thought he was going to land a punch on his older brother, but instead they stood, two angry bulls facing each other.

Alejandro was no longer the reasonable one!
