“Long enough to be working on my second cup,” he tells me before taking a sip of his coffee. “You’ve been out like a rock.”

It isn’t surprising that I slept in since I’ve barely gotten any sleep over the past few nights. A deep yawn presses out of me, and when I look to the nightstand, I grin a little when I see a bagel resting on a plate.

“Figured you’d be hungry.”

It might not seem like much, but coming from Luca, it is. Despite his playboy, rich-kid reputation, he has a soft side that would surprise most.

“Thanks.” I slide the plate onto my lap and rip off a piece of the blueberry bagel before he hands over his coffee to share with me.

“I was thinking that, if you don’t have any plans for today, we could hang out. My first class isn’t until two o’clock.”

After our conversation last night, I would feel terrible if I didn’t accept his offer. After all, he was right when he said we’ve been growing distant. We used to be inseparable. “What did you have in mind?”

“Would you want to hang out at Gravelly Point?”

Handing the coffee back to him, I agree and then tear off another bite of the bagel.

“Maybe we can grab a bite before heading back.”

When he suggests this, I scrunch my nose. “I can’t. I actually have a coffee date with a friend at one thirty.”

He arches a brow. “What friend?”

“Olivia. I told you about it earlier this week.”

“You’re seriously ditching me for that chick?”

“Oh please.” I huff. “Now look who’s being clingy.”

“Uh-uh. Don’t you dare compare me to her.”

We both laugh before I ask, “How do you two know each other anyway?”

“Our families are close, so I’ve known her since we were kids.”

“And do you make it a habit to sleep with all your life-long friends?”

“That was a mistake. Long story short, we got drunk one night after finals week and hooked up. That’s all. Next thing I knew, she wouldn’t stop calling or texting.”

“And that happened your freshman year?” I am trying to remember him telling me about it, but I come up empty.

“Yeah, something like that,” he mumbles before chugging the last of the coffee.

“Hog.”

“Hey, I was nice enough to get you a bagel,” he quips. “Go brew your own coffee.”

I smile at my friend, realizing how much I’ve actually been missing his company.

“Come on. Get ready so we can get out of here.”

Grabbing my bagel, I head into my room and jump in the shower. It doesn’t take me long to pull myself together, and when I walk into the living room, Luca is waiting on me.

“I already have the camping chairs and blankets in my trunk.”

I go to the kitchen and pull down a coffee thermos. “I’m going to make a cup to go. Want one?”

“Nah, I’m good.”
