“Great!”

“But, please, I know I sound like a broken record, Lyss, be careful.”

“Of course.”

“I’ll ask Ben to collect you from the airport. That way I don’t have to send you, my address. It’s better for both of us if you don’t have anything like that on your phone or pc.”

“Or we could do it Mission Impossible style with a self-destructing note,” she said in a put-on accent.

“Uh-huh. And to which mountain range do I send the communication?”

Alyssa laughed.

“Okay, never mind. I’m not a fan of heights.”

“When will you come?”

“The end of next week, if that isn’t too soon.”

“No, that will work. Speaking of which, I will have to work a few shifts while you’re here.”

“No problem. I’ll keep myself occupied.”

“Cool.”

So, it was official. Alyssa was going to meet Ben. It was exciting, actually. She’d be the first person from my close-knit group to do so. I wasn’t concerned that she wouldn’t like Ben. Who wouldn’t like him? The man was near perfect.

I discussed it with him the next morning.

“Babe, Alyssa wants to come for a visit. I told her it’s okay.”

“Oh, nice. It will be lovely meeting your best friend. When is she coming?”

“The end of next week.”

“I’m looking forward to it.”

“Would you do me a favor and collect her from the airport, please, Ben?”

“Absolutely.”

“Thank you,” I said and hugged him.

“Careful, I have to go to work now. If you keep pressing that irresistible body up against me, someone else will have to catch the babies today,” he said in a husky voice.

“Why, Dr. Forbes,” I giggled, “what would the board say?”

“Not a damn thing if they could see you naked,” he chuckled and kissed me passionately.

“You’d better let me go then, my love.”

“Ugh! Okay, but we’re finishing this later.”

“Yes, Sir.”

“Ooh, I like that,” he said and patted my butt.

I was excited about Alyssa’s visit. There was just something about being with someone who’d known you for almost a lifetime that resonated. Alyssa and I had been through all the milestones together, and she knew me better than anyone. She even kept the little notes and letters I wrote her when we were teenagers.
