We were walking through the vineyard when he dropped to one knee and presented me with a rock of a diamond.
“Marry me, Peyton,” he said with a smile.
“Oh, Mateo! It’s stunning,” I said as I stared at the engagement ring.
“All you have to do is say yes, and it’s yours.”
“Yes.”
My lover lifted me off my feet and cradled me in his arms.”
“I’m going to make you the happiest woman in the whole of Mexico,” he said and kissed me passionately.
I’d never been that happy in my entire life. I couldn’t believe it. Peyton Garcia. Who would have guessed it?

“I’m struggling to believe that you’re doing this,” Alyssa said while she slid pins into my hair to secure the veil. “Are you sure, Pey?”
“I’m sure, Lyssa.”
I am, aren’t I? Are you kidding? Yes? You’re sure.
“It’s not too late to make a run for it,” my mother joked and straightened the train on my dress.
“Mom, please. I’m nervous enough. Ugh! I hope I don’t trip over this hem and fall off the landing into the ocean. I told the dressmaker to shorten it. I really have to work on my Spanish.”
It was my wedding day, and we were in picturesque Puerto Vallarta. My handsome groom was with his best man and my dad who was waiting for me to make my appearance. Mateo and I had decided to have an outdoor wedding under the perfect, blue Mexican sky.
My handsome man had gone all out and I couldn’t think of a single thing he’d missed to make this the perfect day for his deliriously happy bride. The flowers, the food, all perfect, including my husband-to-be.
Mom wiped away a tear as she stood back and took the majesty of my dress.
“You are the most beautiful bride I’ve ever seen, my angel girl.”
“Ah, no, Ma! Come on,” I said softly and hugged her. “Don’t cry. You know my plumbing is suspect. If you cry, I’m going to lose it too.”
“I can’t help it, darling. You know I’m a bubbler at the best of times.”
“Snap out of it, you two,” Alyssa said sternly. “You’re not going to ruin your makeup, Peyton. Besides, what will Mateo think when he lifts your veil, and your eyes look like two pissholes in the snow?”
I burst out laughing. Alyssa had that effect on me. No matter what the situation, she could always drag a giggle out of me. Thank God for good old Alyssa.
“Okay, let’s get this show on the road,” I said and straightened my form, hoping it would add just enough height to my stature so that I wouldn’t step on the hem and go ass over kettle down the aisle.
“I’ll tell Dad you’re ready,” Mom said and left the room.
“This is it, babes. Soon you’ll be Peyton Garcia. Man, what a trip.”
“It’s surreal, isn’t it? I keep pinching myself.”
“Promise me something, Peyton.”
“What?”
“Promise me you’ll let me know how you’re getting on.”
