“Fine. Talk to you later.”
Alyssa was right. My hormones were up and down like a seesaw. The days when I was dragging my ass in the dirt were the hardest. It was one of those days. I felt awful. Tired as hell, and rather moody.
Halfway through the day, I snuck off to find a quiet place where I could lie down my head for a few minutes.
“Peyton. Peyton, wake up.”
I opened my eyes to find Olivia standing over me. I must have fallen asleep.
“You really need to tell Ben to let you get some rest at night,” she grinned. “You’ve been asleep for two hours. I’m sorry to wake you, but if the supervisor finds you, she’ll chew you out.”
“Oh, crap,” I said, wiping my eyes. “Thanks, Livvy. I owe you one.”
“No sweat.”
I sat up and rubbed my face.
“Are you sure you’re not pregnant?” she asked me.
“I wish. It’s the injections. They make me feel like I’m permanently hungover.”
“Okay, if you say so. But I’d check if I were you.”
“And waste another month’s wages on pregnancy tests? Hell no.”
“Fine, grumpy chops. I’ll see you out there.”
“Ugh! Thanks.”
Could it be? Olivia did have a point. I hadn’t taken a test in a while, and I was late. But I was often late, so.
The shift dragged on, and I couldn’t wait to get home and sleep. I hit the pillow with a vengeance when I got home that night. I was fast asleep when Ben got home. I slept right through, in fact, until morning.
“Well, hello, Sleeping Beauty,” he said and placed a cup of coffee next to me on the nightstand.
“Wow. I can’t believe I slept right through. Sorry, babe.”
“Don’t be silly. You must have needed it. How are you feeling?”
“A little better, actually.”
“Great. Here,” he said and handed me a pregnancy test, “whizz on this for Doctor.”
“Seriously, Ben?”
“Uh-huh. Humor me.”
“Ugh…fine.”
I took it and went to the toilet. I peed on the stick, left it on the edge of the tub, and went back to get my coffee.
“Did you change the brand? This coffee tastes funny.”
Ben went to the bathroom and came back, holding the stick.
“Uhm, I think you may want to have a look at this,” he said and smiled.
No! Could it be? Was I?
