“I get it,” I assured him, knowing how overwhelmed he must’ve felt after seeing himself in that state.
“Do you get it? Because I feel like I’m all alone in this,” he said.
My eyes widened. “How can you say that when you’ve got me?”
“I don’t have you,” he said, his pained eyes avoiding mine again. “I haven’t even given you a choice.”
I cocked my head. “I don’t do anything I don’t want to do. If I wanted you to leave me alone, I wouldn’t allow you in.”
“I really need you, Nora.”
“You’ve got me,” I assured him.
“I’m scared.”
A fissure cracked in my heart. “I’m here for you. We’re in this together.”
His eyes locked on mine. “Together?”
I nodded and electricity crackled between us. Could he feel it, too? “Together.”
“Nora?”
My head twisted toward the doorway.
Julie stood in the doorway, her pink braids hanging on her shoulders and her brows furrowed. “What are you doing?” she asked.
“Oh…” I said, stepping away from the wall. “Nothing.” It wasn’t like she didn’t know I could speak to spirits. But, striking up a bond with one was a whole other level of crazy. “I’ll be right out.”
Julie ducked back out front leaving Kyler and me alone once again.
I turned back to him. “I should probably get back out there.”
He nodded. “I’ll walk you home at the end of your shift.”
“I have a reading, so I won’t be ready to head out until five,” I explained.
“That’s fine. It’s not like I have other plans.”
I laughed, though I knew his situation was far from funny. “I’ll see you later.” I moved to the doorway and headed back out front, suddenly eager for both my shift and reading to be over.
CHAPTER 8
“That was really cool what you did back there,” Kyler said as we walked through town.
I glanced around, making sure no one noticed me talking to myself. “I talk toyou, don’t I?”
“Yeah, but you were able to tell her everything her mother wanted her to know. Did you see the way she was crying?”
“Yeah. That’s what happens.”
His hand brushed mine, and a shiver rushed up my arm. “Every time?”
“Well, yeah. It’s hard to hear that your loved one is so close but you can’t see them,” I explained.
“Why can only some people see spirits?”
“I told you. Everyone has the ability. They just need to be open to it and hone their skills.”
