“Unscathed?!” Her eyes cut to mine, cold and unabashed. “You call having my boyfriend in a coma unscathed?”
“Ask where we were going,” Kyler said as he crossed his arms and stared at her.
“Where were you going that night?” I asked.
“We were coming back from a party,” she said, her eyes moving back to him.
“And, he just lost control of the car?” I asked.
“It was dark and icy,” she mumbled.
“Ask whose party we were at,” he urged.
“Whose party?” I asked.
“No one you’d know,” she said.
“She’s such a bitch,” he said. “I can’t believe I dated her.”
“Yup,” I agreed.
“What?” she snapped.
“You’re right. I probably wouldn’t know them. We had our own friends at school so he didn’t really talk about anyone here,” I lied.
“We’ve known each other since eighth grade and we’ve been together since last summer,” she said. “He never mentioned me?”
“Sorry,” I said.
Her jaw clenched, ticking wildly.
“Was he drunk?” I asked.
“No,” her tone was low and menacing.
“Let’s go,” Kyler said. “You’re just pissing her off and it’s pissing me off that I can’t remember.”
“Well, I should probably leave you two alone,” I said moving toward the door.
“No need to come back,” she muttered. “He’s got me.”
I said nothing as I walked out.
“She was pleasant,” I mumbled as we made our way toward the kitchen.
“A dream,” he agreed.
“I’m so sorry,” Sue said as we found her in the kitchen. “I didn’t realize she’d be by.”
“No problem,” I said. “Thanks for letting me sit with him.”
“How’d it go?”
“It was nice seeing him.”
She gave me a sad smile.
“Any idea if he’ll wake up?” I asked.
