“Can I help you?” a woman asked.
My eyes popped open. “I’d like to purchase this please.”
She took it from me and rang me out. I walked home with the bag in my hand excited I’d be able to have a small piece of him.
He wasn’t on the sofa when I got home. But a glass of water and two Advil were on the table with a note from Izzy. She’d be staying at her parents’ house tonight.
I showered then pulled on jeans and a pink cashmere sweater, knowing wherever he planned to take me, the outfit would work for the evening. It wasn’t like he could take me anywhere that cost money. I guess there weren’t many options for a night out with a spirit.
I dried and curled my hair before swiping on some light makeup and heading downstairs.
Kyler sat on the sofa and his eyes drifted over my outfit. “Hi there.”
“Did you just get here?”
“A few minutes ago. Did you have a nice day?” he asked.
“Funny you should ask.” I sat down beside him holding the bottle of cologne.
“What’s this?”
“I heard it’s what you wear.”
“From who?”
“One guess.”
Anger flashed in his eyes. “Where?”
“She was my reading.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“I didn’t know. And, it’s not like I could’ve just called you on your phone.”
“What’d she want?”
“Well, for one, to let me know she knew I lied about knowing you from school. And two, to speak to you on the other side.”
He dropped his head back and groaned. “Did I speak to her?”
I laughed. “No. But, her grandfather showed up.”
“What’d he have to say?” he asked.
“That she’s keeping a secret.”
His head shot upright. “What kind of secret?”
I shrugged. “He disappeared when I asked.”
His eyes searched the ceiling as if trying to decipher the grandfather’s cryptic message. “We need to find out.”
“I know. But I can’t force spirits to tell me anything.”
“Let’s go back to my house tomorrow. If she’s there, I’ll appear and speak to her. I’ll find out what she’s hiding.”
I’m glad he was so certain she’d be forthcoming because I wasn’t sure she’d want anyone knowing a secret even her grandfather didn’t see fit to tell me. And, though I always tried to be positive, I had a sinking feeling that I knew what that secret might be.
