Grace
I stared in my bedroom mirror, applying some blush to my cheeks.
“Girl, you look gorgeous,” Holly said from our Facetime call. She and Laney were grinning like fools.
“Turn so I can see the back of your hair,” Laney said.
I twisted so they could see the loose curls around my head. I’d clipped rhinestones in random spots so they’d sparkle when they caught the light.
“It looks sogood,” they cooed.
I laughed.
“Did you find out anything about the fight?” Holly asked.
I shook my head. “He wasn’t in school and neither were Sawyer or Saint as far as I could tell.”
“But gossip had to be spreading,” Laney ascertained.
I shrugged. “Most girls left early to get their hair and makeup done, so my classes were pretty empty. Everyone was pretty consumed with the prom.”
There was a knock on my bedroom door.
“Come in.” I glanced over my shoulder.
My mom stepped inside, her eyes taking me in. “You look beautiful.”
I smiled before looking back at Holly and Laney on my phone. “Gotta go.”
“Havefuuuuun,” they said before I ended the call and stood up.
“Turn around,” my mom said.
I did a little twirl, having opted for the flowy pink dress with the rhinestone bodice and open back. I’d known it was the dress the moment I slipped it on. I hoped Seren liked my choice.
“Breathtaking,” she said.
“I know. It must’ve cost a fortune.”
“Not the dress, Grace.You.”
I tilted my head to the side, appreciating her compliment when I knew she didn’t want me going with Seren. “Thank you.”
She walked over and hugged me, careful not to wrinkle my dress or mess up my hair. “I love you.”
I laughed. “I’m going to the prom not getting married.”
She stepped back with tears in her eyes. “I know. It’s just sometimes I forget how quickly you’re growing up.”
I glanced at the time on my phone. Seven fifty-eight. I grabbed my rhinestone clutch and tucked my phone and lip gloss inside. “Well, this is it.”
She gave me one last look and smiled. “Have fun. Just not too much fun.”
I laughed. “Don’t wait up.”
“Grace,” she warned.
“I’ll text if I’m gonna be late. But remember. You can trust me.”
