I grin and get up from my knees to kiss him. “You’ll have to be a good boy and go to sleep.”

He rolls his eyes. “This sounds like a Santa thing,” he says, turning away from me and heading for the bed. He says that, but he loves surprises.

I follow him a few minutes later and wrap around him. Egon sighs and backs his body tightly against mine so I spoon him as if my body were another skin. I hold him close, my hand over his heart.

“Love you, husband,” he whispers.

For a minute, I imagine the face he’s going to give me when he looks into the basket at the kitten waiting for him at our new house.Ourhouse. The place where we’ll be starting our life together as adults. The place where we’ll grow together. Where we’ll share holidays and host friends and spoil each other.

Where maybe we’ll argue and disagree but where we’ll always make up. Where we’ll spend so much time making memories, the walls will glow with them. And in that place, we’ll have our first kid. A little black and gray kitten that I named Puck.

And Egon’s eyes will fill with tears as he coos to it and give me heart eyes because he’s only asked for a kitten for the last eleven months. This will be the beginning of our family in whatever capacity that takes.

“I love you, too, Egon,” I say, matching his tone. “I always have, and I will forever.”

He hums as he falls asleep.
