“Some things you can’t fix.”
“You’d be surprised. Now, get some sleep. You’re safe. No one will get through me to get to you.”
“Okay.”
“If you wake up and I’m not here, I’ll be working out. There’s juice in the fridge and bread for toast. That will do you until I get back from the run.”
“That’s more than enough,” she said.
“Good night.”
He closed his eyes and waited until she was deeply asleep before he opened them so he could study her. She was so sweet and beautiful, and having survived what she did, he knew she was incredibly strong. He vowed to himself that he’d find and either kill or put away every person that hurt this precious woman.
He felt like he’d just closed his eyes when his body awakened the next morning. He knew even if he lay there, he’d be unable to fall asleep. The first thing he saw when he opened his eyes was her hand on his chest. She wasn’t much closer than she had been the night before, but just her reaching for him was enough. He also thought it was strange that he hadn’t felt it and jumped out of his skin or reacted like he normally would have if someone had touched him. It was because it was Cat who was already settled into his heart.
The hair covered her face, so he smoothed it from her brow. She looked peaceful, and he was glad he’d been able to give that to her.
He lifted her hand and pressed a kiss against her knuckles. “I’ll be back soon,” he whispered, not wanting to wake her up, then rolled out of bed. He was dressed and out the door within five minutes.
When he pulled up to Caden’s, he saw that Nick was already there, and the two men were in the front yard talking and stretching.
“Morning, guys,” he called out.
Both men stopped and stared at him. He knew he couldn’t hide anything from them and didn’t care because he planned to discuss Cat with them anyway.
He held up a hand when he got to them. “Let’s wait until after we’re done with the run and weights. I need an outlet for my tension because it feels like I’ll snap if I don’t do something.”
“You got it,” Caden said. “The other two are already pulling up.”
Macy nodded. The five men set off. When his lungs started to burn, he was finally able to take a cleansing breath.
When they returned to Caden’s, the five worked in the basement doing a few rounds on the weights. He did an extra one because he needed to gather his thoughts, and the pain made him feel centered.
Link tossed a bottle of water at him as he walked over to them and sat on one of the stools in the room. Macy guzzled the whole thing and then crushed the bottle with his hand before tossing it into the garbage can.
“Tell us,” Nick said.
“Cat was held prisoner for four years. She was only sixteen when she went to him. In that time, the fucker tortured her. He raped her the very first night. At one time, she was laying on the floor, already hurting from one of his beatings when he stomped on her leg, breaking it.”
All the men started cursing, and Macy could feel the aggression build.
“I want the fucker and the other two he shared her with.”
“Jesus Christ. Where were her parents?” Link asked.
“She said they died, but I want to check that out, too,” Macy said. “Why would parents make this monster a guardian? They had to know something was off about him.”
The others gave ideas on what could be done and what they could do to help him.
“I’m not sure yet. I want to talk to the club owner that took her in. I know the sheriff has his name and number.”
“I’ll check with Liam and see what he can find. Send him information as soon as you get it,” Jake said. “He’ll have a file going in hours.”
Macy nodded. Good, the sooner, the better. “I better head back.”
“Is she coming to work today?” Link asked.
“Yes. She’ll be with me as much as possible.”
