»What on earth is eye-sex?« Oh, if only my coworker knew that it wasn’t just our gazes that shared such intimacy.

»I think you know exactly what it means, baby.«

I held back a laugh. »If you say so.«

»So this is the first client you’ve had the pleasure of working with here? I’m jealous. I’ve been working here for three years and have never encountered such a smoldering specimen.« He pouted his lower lip, and this time I couldn’t help but laugh.

»Your time will come, Benni.« I stood up, smoothed my blouse and skirt, and straightened my shoulders. »I’m sure of it.«

»Don’t let him wrap you around his finger too much,« he said, grinning at me. If only he knew how much that had already happened.

I responded with a smile and crossed the hall to Nic’s office. Carefully, I knocked and entered after hearing a »Come in.«

The two were sitting on a seating arrangement in front of the wide window front. Baron confidently placed one arm on the backrest and crossed one leg over the other. His gaze became so intense as it met mine that I had to look away instantly. Why did he do such a thing? Tonight, he’d be in for an earful.

»Grace, come, have a seat.« Nic gestured to the vacant spot next to Baron, who shifted slightly to the side.

With a pounding heart, I sat down next to him, suppressing the urge to touch him. »I heard the event was a resounding success!« Nic began. »But honestly, I didn’t expect anything less. Baron has been singing your praises.«

I dared a fleeting glance and immediately regretted it. My eyes flew to his full lips, which held a slight smirk. It was nice to see that he found the situation amusing.

»I’m glad to hear that,« I replied.

»It truly was the first release event that met my satisfaction one hundred percent. We hope to have Miss Stone’s services again next year,« Baron said, and Nic leaned back with a satisfied expression on his face.

»I hope Miss Stone stays with us for a long time.«

»At the moment, there’s no place I’d rather be,« I replied honestly. I wanted Nic to know that I currently had no intentions of going freelance. Maybe someday, but for now, I relished the prospect of a steady salary and secure job. At least as secure as it could be until Nic found out about Baron and me and ended my probationary period on the spot. Or would he? Maybe it wouldn’t bother him, even though Baron was one of his biggest clients? My thoughts spun circles in my head, and I felt slightly dizzy.

»I’m delighted to inform you that I can officially welcome you as a permanent member of our team. Your probationary period is hereby over.« Nic stood up, and I followed suit. He shook my hand firmly, and I didn’t quite know how to react to this joyful news.

»Thank you so much,« I replied with a massive lump in my throat. The fact that Nic trusted my abilities so deeply made my own self-confidence grow.

»And Grace, private matters are private. You have clearly shown that you are a fantastic addition to our team.«

Oh no, what had Baron told him? I glanced at him briefly, but he just shrugged innocently.

»I cannot express how much this means to me!«

Feeling slightly dazed, I left Nic’s office with Baron by my side after another quarter of an hour. He bumped me lightly with his shoulder as Nic’s door closed behind us. »Didn’t I tell you not to worry?« he whispered, while the elation still wrestled with the surprise inside me.

»What did you tell him? Did you tell him about us?«

»I would never betray you, Honey. I honestly didn’t say anything,« he replied and briefly touched my hand. He couldn’t resist, and I couldn’t deny that I longed for every touch from him. »Nic simply knows what’s good.«

We stood facing each other in the hallway leading to the elevators. Most of the office doors were open, some offices separated only by tall glass panels. Everyone could see us, and my heart pounded fiercely against my ribcage. »Damn, I want to kiss you so badly right now,« Baron murmured, and a tightening sensation immediately spread through my core.

»Later,« I whispered back.

»You can count on it. Tonight, eight o’clock at my place, I’ll cook for you. And I bought new curtains. Opaque.« He winked at me.

I nodded in response, struggling to suppress a grin. Once again, Baron held out his hand, and I returned his firm grip. »It was a pleasure working with you,« I said a little louder, and he nodded back in a businesslike manner.

Back at my desk, my smartphone vibrated briefly in my bag. I pulled it out and glanced at it.

Baron: I can hardly wait to peel off that tight skirt of yours and pay tribute to your fantastic work once more, in great detail.

Grace: Don’t play with fire, Mr. Spencer!
