I was about to continue walking and exit the hall through the wide glass door when a voice caught my attention.

»Grace?«

I slowly turned around. »Sonia!« One of my former regular clients approached me. She was only a few years older than me, ran a thriving fashion empire, and had booked our event company almost monthly for her events. People loved her, and she loved making them happy. I liked her a lot.

We embraced, as our relationship had always been friendly. »What are you doing here?« she asked. »Do you live here now?«

»Yes, you could say that,« I dodged her question.

»It’s such a shame what Mel did to you!« I nodded, as the sting of betrayal still sat deep enough to cause pain. »I miss you! You organized the best parties and were truly a genius in the industry! I hope you’ll continue!«

Her words were kind, but at the moment, I was struggling just to get through the day. Old bills still needed to be paid, debts settled. My team had scattered and had to find new jobs. Everything had fallen apart, and continuing was the last thing on my mind.

»Listen, I might know someone who could use a talented woman like you. Contact Nic and tell him you’re coming from me!« She pulled a piece of paper from her pocket, scribbled a number on it, and handed it to me hesitantly.

»He runs the Incentive event agency in downtown, and I’m quite satisfied with his work. Not as much as with you, but if you could work things out with him, it would be a win for everyone!«

»Thank you, Sonia, that’s really kind of you,« I said, and she pulled me into another embrace. It felt good to be shown that I hadn’t only made mistakes in the past, and I sank a little into her embrace before we let go and she grinned widely at me.

»And if you’re living here now, maybe we can meet for a glass of wine? You know, I’m not a big fan of coffee.«

»I’d be delighted, that would be a pleasure.«

»Apartment number nine, come by anytime! I have to go now!«

»See you, Sonia! I’ll definitely get in touch!«

»Bye-bye!«

She strutted outside, and my gaze drifted to the area next to the reception desk. On a black leather seating arrangement, Baron sat, watching me with intense eyes. His mere expression sent electric jolts through my core, and I raised my chin. He didn’t wait long, gracefully stood up, and approached me. Today he wore dark blue suit trousers and a white shirt without a tie. His appearance left me even more speechless than seeing him in casual clothes. He looked professional, dominant, and incredibly attractive.

»Goldilocks,« he whispered huskily, showing a grin. The same wicked grin that had brought me to climax in the bathtub yesterday. Damn. Once again, I found it difficult to breathe. What was wrong with me?

»Have you been eavesdropping on me again?« I asked challengingly, and he shrugged.

»I can’t help it if you conduct your conversations with other people in public at such volume.« So he had heard that I was looking for a job. Which was none of his business. »Have you thought about calling me?« he asked, thankfully diverting from the topic.

»I’ve briefly considered it,« I admitted.

He laughed. »And hopefully haven’t decided yet, as unfortunately, I haven’t seen a call on my phone.«

»Do you usually have success with this tactic? Apparently, you must if you’re pulling it off.«

»What tactic?« he asked, amused. »I honestly told you I wanted to get to know you.«

»So that we can perform the same show in front of your windows for all the neighbors you probably have in droves?«

»In the best case, yes,« he actually replied, and I shook my head. Even though I pretended to be annoyed, secretly I was having a lot of fun in our conversations. And apparently, I intrigued him. Maybe only because I refused to give in to him, but that was fine with me. As long as it didn’t stop. A horn sounded outside, and Baron glanced fleetingly through the windows. »Unfortunately, I have to go; my car is waiting, but you’re aware that I won’t give up.« That wasn’t a question.

»Until what happens?«

His eyes sparkled like transparent bottle glass. »Until you give me a chance.« I said nothing in response. He gestured towards the door. »Weren’t you planning to head outside?« he asked, and his gaze slowly traveled down my running outfit and back up into my eyes. It felt as if I were naked instead of fully clothed.

»Sharp observation, Sherlock,« I said, and walked past him, but not without swaying my hips a bit more than usual. However, before I could reach the door, he hurried forward and held it open for me.

»A wolf in sheep’s clothing, how charming,« I muttered and earned another dark laugh.

Once outside, he hesitated. He didn’t want to leave. I could tell by the excited glimmer that still shone in his eyes. And truthfully, I would have preferred to stay as well, but it was part of our game to pretend that I wouldn’t think about him when I was alone. Although he knew. Oh, he knew it all too well.
