“We had sex.”

My eyes bulge. “Then what?”

“We fell asleep.”

God, this is like pulling teeth.

“And?”

“When I woke up, he was gone.”

He was sneaking out of her room this morning, clearly not wanting to wake her.

“Did you talk to him about it?”

“Yes. I went into his room this morning, hoping we’d finally take a chance with each other, but he told me it should have never happened. I feel so naïve thinking we could finally have something, but he doesn’t want that with me.”

Ouch.I can’t believe he was so heartless. The Nash I know doesn’t seem that way. He had to know telling her that would hurt her. He’ll be getting an earful from me when I get the chance.

Embracing her, I whisper, “I’m sorry, Sophie.” I have no other words.

We sit in silence, words not needing to be said.

A knock breaks us apart, and Leo calls my name from the other side.

“Please don’t tell him yet. I need some time to wrap my head around this. I just can’t deal with it right now,” Sophie pleads.

“Okay. But if neither of you tell him soon, I’ll have to, Sophie.”

“Okay.”

Opening the door, a curious Leo looks between us. “Everything okay?”

“Yep. Everything is fine. Nothing but girl talk,” I lie.

I hate lying, but Sophie needs time. I’ll tell him if they don’t. I wasn’t lying about that part.

Sophie gives him a smile, and it must be enough because Leo takes my hand and guides me downstairs to the living room. When I hear the others in the kitchen talking, I release Leo’s hand and head to his bedroom instead, and he follows me.

From his dad’s cool reception, I don’t want to see him again quite yet. I’ll give them some time together, so I’ll go home for a bit. I’m always here anyway, so I should spend some time with Mom and Manda.

Watching me gather up my stuff prompts Leo to ask, “You’re leaving?”

“Yes. I haven’t spent much time with Mom and Manda lately. Your dad is here, so why don’t you spend some time with him, and I’ll spend some time with them?”

“Are you sure? You’re welcome to stay.”

“Yes, I’m sure. I’ll see you tonight.”

“I’ll text you and let you know what time I’ll be there to pick you up for dinner.”

My answering smile is fake. “Sounds good.” He raises his eyebrows at my insincere reaction.

With a quick kiss goodbye, I rush home.

Dinner was dreadful. Connor barely spoke, much less acknowledged me the whole time we were there, so I asked Leo to drop me off on his way home before once again telling him to spend time with his dad.
