I glared at Ava. “Because she’s not my cup of tea.”
Ava laughed. “Sure.”
We ordered drinks. I’d moved from champagne to wine—mixing alcohol just got me more wasted, and I had to keep my wits about me if I wanted to handle Lorenzo right. That meant keeping him at arm’s length, and if I drank too much, I would make the mistake of letting my guard down.
Besides, the wine was fantastic. I considered myself to be a connoisseur, and this was as good as it got, in my humble opinion.
The night became a blur. Faces passed, and I drank one glass of wine after the other until I was sufficiently numb.
Somewhere, the bride and groom disappeared on their honeymoon.
Ava and Noah left to pick up their kids from a babysitter.
The guests started to dwindle, and then it was just me and a few other people.
“It won’t do for a pretty girl to sit at the bar alone,” Lorenzo said, coming up to me. He’d gotten rid of his blazer and tie, the top button of his shirt was undone, and he’d rolled up his sleeves to show bronzed muscular forearms and a dark splash of chest hair.
God, I was too drunk for this.
“Where’s your date?” I asked.
“She’s working.”
I nodded. I wanted to know where he knew her from. I wanted to know if they were serious. I wanted to know a lot of things, but if I asked him, it would look like I gave a shit.
Which I didn’t.
“You look good, Celine,” Lorenzo said.
“I know.”
Lorenzo grinned. “Have a drink with me.”
“I’ve been having drinks all night.”
“I noticed.”
I raised my eyebrows.
Lorenzo lifted his hand to summon the bartender and ordered a glass of wine and a glass of whiskey. The alcohol arrived, and Lorenzo lifted his glass toward me in a toast.
“To the past.” His eyes locked on mine, and in them I saw whole worlds that I wanted to explore. His square jawline made him look like a god, and he smiled at me. Damn Anna who’d come with him.
I lifted my glass, and we clinked them together. We each took a sip.
“This wine is fantastic,” I said. “I don’t know where the hotel sourced this from, but—” Before I could finish my sentence, Lorenzo leaned in and pressed his lips against mine. I froze, but I couldn’t help myself. I’d never been able to resist him.
I kissed him back. Fuck Anna and everyone else here who should never have been a part of the picture in the first place.
When Lorenzo broke the kiss, his lips parted, and his eyes were even darker than usual.
“Come to my room with me.”
“What about Anna?”
“Cara, this isn’t an event I want her to coordinate.”
I should have said no. Lorenzo had been a wild fling in the past, and that was exactly where he should have stayed, but I was drunk and he was so fucking hot that my inhibitions were close to zero.
