I smiled sweetly. “It almost sounded like you’re trying to tell me what to do.”
Lorenzo’s eyes flashed, and Anna cleared her throat, shifting her weight from one sensible heel to the other.
“I’m going to find Lexi. I think she needs help.”
Anna walked away.
“She seems nice,” I said.
“You don’t mean that,” Lorenzo said.
“You don’t know me,” I said tightly.
“Oh, but I do,cara mia,” Lorenzo said in a deep, soft voice, and my insides turned to mush at the sound of the pet name he’d always used for me.
I shook off the butterflies and the history between us.
“I’m not the same person I was then,” I said tightly, fighting the urge to lean in. The smell of his cologne wrapped around me. I could still conjure the taste of his skin in my mind, the feel of him inside me. I glanced at him. He didn’t look like he had all those years ago, but I was sure parts of him hadn’t changed…
“Enjoy the reception, Celine,” Lorenzo said when I didn’t find the words to say something snide to him. He turned around and walked away, and I caught myself staring at his perfectly sculpted ass.
I grabbed another glass of champagne and downed it.
Fuck, Lorenzo Carelli and his ability to render me—Celine Forger, the woman who had an answer to everything—speechless.
I drank.
I drank alot.
It was a wedding—that was what they were for. Gavin and Paige had an open bar, and Ava joined me at the bar once the happy couple had been announced and the wedding party were free to do whatever they wanted.
“Drunk already?” she asked with a smile.
“Still sober?” I answered.
She laughed. “I’m still breastfeeding, so I’m taking it slow.”
Right. “When am I meeting the little tyke? I don’t see a single kid here.”
“Yeah, Paige decided to make it a no-kids wedding so that everyone can let their hair down and enjoy it. Between all the guests here, we easily have more than ten kids.”
“A regular daycare.”
Ava laughed. “Something like that.” She eyed me with a mischievous smile. “I see Lorenzo is here.”
I rolled my eyes. “So everyone keeps pointing out.”
“Noah told me about the time when he stayed with you. Small world, huh?”
“How did he end up here, anyway?” I asked. “I thought he was still in Italy.”
I’d kept tabs on him for a while after he’d left, but I’d stopped looking after a couple of months. Lorenzo was the type of guy who always had a woman on his arm, and even though we’d agreed from the start his time with us would just be a fling, it hadn’t been my favorite thing to see him running around with every luscious, busty Italian woman in the country.
“His friend Anna is the one who coordinated the wedding,” Ava said. “She’s here on the clock, and Paige told her to bring a plus one, and there he was. Noah nearly fell on his back when he saw Lorenzo, and the two hit it off like no time passed at all.”
“Hmm,” I said. “Anna isn’t my cup of tea.”
“Because she’s here with Lorenzo?”
