He carried the bag out the door. I stared at Ava.

“Is he fucking serious?” I asked.

Ava nodded gravely. “I’m afraid so. Have a good trip!” She hugged me. I reluctantly hugged her back. If this was how it started…

“You’re going to be fine,” Lexi said. “Just breathe and enjoy nature all around you.”

I nodded. I didn’t know if that was going to happen—I didn’t like naturethatmuch. Granted, I had a great garden and often sat on my patio for breakfast, but I had this sinking feeling that this wasn’t going to be like that. Not if I had to leave my shoes behind and my makeup…

“We have to get going, or we’ll miss the flight,” Lorenzo called from the car.

I turned around and walked to him. He opened the car door for me, and I slid into the passenger seat. He was driving today. No driver, just the two of us.

When he pulled out of Ava’s driveway, he glanced at me.

“It will be fun,” he said.

“Of course,” I said and smiled at him. “Tons of fun.”

Lorenzo chuckled at my sarcasm.

“I’m glad you’re here,” he said.

That made me feel warm. I was glad I was here too. The camping part was bullshit, in my opinion—the sooner we could get it over with, the better—but I liked the idea of spending a couple of days with Lorenzo. It would be the way it had been when we’d been kids. We’d spent so much time together during the few months he’d stayed with us, and it had been pure bliss.

This could be like that, too. Even if I had to do a bit of camping in the wild for it.

When we arrived at the airport, Lorenzo parked and lifted my bag out of the car.

“Jesus, Celine, you really didn’t need to pack this much.”

“It’s a third of what I would have had,” I said bitterly.

Lorenzo lifted a much smaller bag out of the car. “I know.”

“Where are we meeting the others?” I asked.

“At the camping grounds, they all caught different flights.”

I nodded. “Just you and me, then?”

“You and me, babe.”

He winked at me.

“Tell me we’re flying first class, at least.”

“Yeah, we are,” Lorenzo said with a chuckle. “I thought I’d give you a treat.”

“How nice of you,” I said and rolled my eyes, but God, I was grateful that he’d done at least that. I was more and more out of my depth, and I had no idea what to expect of the next couple of days.

There was a chance I would be in over my head but damned if I would admit that to anyone.

Lorenzo, especially.
