The light is reflecting off of the tears in her eyes. She is on the verge of crying and I don’t have a single ounce of pity. Back in the day, I would feel remorseful for snapping at her and quickly offer her an apology. Not this time. She did this to herself– and me.
“I didn’t set out to have an affair with Kevin. It just happened. We had so much in common and I quickly realized he was my soul mate,” she continues.
My hands grip the steering wheel because I’m afraid I’ll choke the hell out of her. She has a lot of audacity in telling me any of this. Who the hell does she think she is? Like she gets a free pass to try to smooth things over. No. She doesn’t have the right to even speak to me.
“Jenna, go back inside,” I growl with my eyes locked on the lamp post in the yard.
“Ysenia, I want to make this right!” she sobs.
“Make this right?” I scream at her. “You stole my fiance and disappeared from my life! There is no making this right! Now, go inside, tell your brother to get his ass out here, and let’s cut ties.”
“Ysen–”
“Now!” I slam my fists on my steering wheel. Tears are threatening to burst from my eyes. I’m barely keeping it together.
“Yse–” she takes a deep breath. “Okay. Just know I’m truly sorry.”
I hear her walk off, but I don’t dare face her. I just focus on the world in front of me. This is a chapter in my life that I need to close. No matter how bad it hurts.
Goodbye, Jenna.
Chapter Sixteen
Miguel
Warmth against my face and the smell of bacon pulled me from my deep sleep. I open my eyes and look around. I don’t recognize anything. I’m in a bedroom but not one I’m familiar with.
Slowly, I sit up and take in more of the room. It has a country and Spanish vibe. My mind instantly goes to Ysenia’s parents.
“Oh, no,” I groan.
How shit-faced did I get last night? How’d I end up at their house? I didn’t even remember leaving my mom’s house. Hell, I didn’t remember leaving the room I was drinking with Hank in.
I climb out of bed and make my way over to the door. I’m not ready to face Ysenia’s poor parents. I can only pray that I didn’t make too big of a fool of myself in front of them.
Knock. Knock. Knock.
I damn near jump out of my skin from the sudden knocking.
“Yes?” I call out.
“The food is ready, if you are hungry,” Ysenia’s dad replies. I quickly open the door. “Ah. So you are hiding from us.”
“What? No, Sir. Not at all. I would–” I gasp, shaking my head.
“Relax, Mijo. I was only kidding,” he chuckles. He pats me on the shoulder. “Freshen up then meet us in the dining room when you are ready.” With that, he turns and walks away.
Ysenia has the nicest parents. When I came over the first time, they made me feel like I had been there thousands of times. And now, after my night of getting drunk, they still welcomed me in with open arms.
I can’t help the cheesy ass smile that’s stretching across my face. It is nice to see a family that isn’t broken. And makes it even better because this loving family is there for Ysenia. I know she won’t go through life alone. They’ll always be there.
“Ugh. What the hell am I talking about?” I groan.
I want to be there for her too. I haven’t figured it all out yet but I’ll find a way to have her in my life. Even if I have to settle forjust friends. The dreadful just friends. That’s the last damn thing I want. I’d be jealous and hurt every time she told me about a boyfriend or someone she slept with. However, if that’s the price I have to pay to be in her life.
“Good morning, Miguel,” Mrs. Copeland says as I walk into the dining room. It is just her and Mr. Copeland sitting at the table. It is filled with a variety of breakfast foods and glasses filled with juice.
“Good morning, Mrs. Copeland,” I smile. She rolls her eyes, shakes her head, and laughs.
