Danielle sniffed then and rose to her feet. Her hand holding the water glass shook but she set it aside before she said. “I wish you didn’t tell me about Mom. I hated you for making her leave, but now I just hate you both.”
“Danny, please …”
She walked out of the kitchen before I could stop her, and I heard the bedroom door slam close before I lowered myself to a chair.
Now Danielle knew the truth, but it didn’t mean she resented me less. I wanted to work this out with her, but I didn’t think that was possible now.Especially since I love Leah.
Both women stayed on my mind for the rest of the day and even at work the next day while I tried to figure out what to do about Leah’s court case. After briefing Peter on the case, he had a brilliant idea, and I worked with it immediately.
Peter suggested handing over Leah’s address to Trevor. That way, he could go find her, and I could figure out exactly what he was after from Leah.
Was it just the court case? Or is there something else?
It was a wild plan, and I didn’t like Trevor one bit, but I had to go with it. I called Leah to warn her, but she didn’t take the call. I kept trying until evening but when I still couldn’t reach her, I drove to the cottage to drop the message in person. We needed to stay on top of this if nothing else. Her whole life was in the hands of Trevor at this moment.
Chapter Nineteen
Leah
“Whatareyoudoinghere?” I asked in a pretend shock when Trevor showed up at the cottage that morning. Tommy had come earlier to tell me all about his plan. I had to make sure to get as much information as I could from Trevor about what happened that night.
I didn’t have the memories, but he did, so only he knew what truly went down.
His lips curbed at the side, and he arched a full brow. “Did you think you could run forever, Leah?”
“I asked you …”
He stepped over the threshold and into the house before I could stop him. His menacing strides made me back away in fear, but the knowledge of Tommy being in the kitchen helped soothe me a little.
“How did you find me?”
“Wild guess,” he questioned in a teasing tone. “I hired a PI, a very good one at that because he found you in just a couple of days. You’re not very good at hiding you know, Leah. At the very least you should have fled the country, if you wanted to run from what you did.”
“I didn’t do anything,” I defended. “I don’t remember what happened that night.”
“You don’t?” He touched my shoulder and when I tried to get away from him, he pinned his hands down there and tightened his hold.
“You were drunk, and you ran into that car. That driver was pretty injured, and his family wants you to pay for what you did.”
“And what about what you did?” I folded my hands over my chest and hiked my chin high, determined not to show that I was nervous and terrified of his presence.
Trevor had never been violent with me, but after that fight at the club, something had changed between us. I couldn’t trust him … Not after the drugs and everything.
“You were in the car; Trevor, and you know what happened. I don’t remember anything, but yet the next morning I had drugs in my system. You’re the one who should be telling me what went down that night, Trevor.”
He tossed his head back and laughed. “What, are you wearing a recorder or something?” he teased before laughing again and shaking his head.
When I didn’t say a word or change my expression, he backed away.
“You really don’t remember?”
“Humor me …”
Trevor chuckled again, then he looked around the living room and said, “All right … You were drinking a lot that night, and yes, my friends and Imighthave slipped you a little something so you could loosen up … That’s the real reason you were drinking so much that night, to begin with.
“You wanted to drive, and I let you at first, but then I found out how bad off you were, and it was way too dangerous for both of us, so I took over and did the driving. I will admit I was high too, but I had more control over what I was doing. That driver came out of nowhere and I didn’t see him because I lost my contacts at the club, but after the accident, you were unconscious, so I drove off and then took you to the hospital.”
His confession made my chest hurt instantly, and tears stung my eyes as I stared at him. My breath turned heavy, and I clenched my right fist tight while trying to control the urge to ram it into his face.
