His body tenses, although his steps don’t falter as he carries me wherever we’re going. I don’t need to question him. I know I’ll be safe.

I’ve no idea if he responds to my confession because the darkness finally takes over, dragging me into his clutches.

You’re safe now.

You’re in his arms.

The first thing I hear the next time I come to isn’t a dog barking, but people talking.

Voices I know. Voices I love.

Opening my eyes takes more effort than I ever thought possible. The room is thankfully dark, but there’s enough sunlight streaming through the curtains to allow me to see Blakely and Calli sitting beside me.

Blake looks wrecked. Her eyes are rimmed with red, her cheeks stained with tears as she wrings a ruined tissue with her fingers.

“Still nothing?” Blake asks when Calli wakes her phone up in her lap.

“No. No news is good news. They’ll have this under control.” Calli’s words are full of confidence that I really want to feel.

Shifting my sore body turns both of their eyes on me.

“Evie,” Blakely gasps, jumping to her feet in a heartbeat. “Oh my God, Evie,” she sobs, bending over me and resting her brow against mine.

“I’m okay,” I force out as tears trickle over my temples, soaking into my hair. “Where’s Alex?”

“Evie,” Blake warns in a tone I really, really don’t like as she lowers herself to the edge of the bed.

“Did he leave? He was here. I remember him.”

A warm hand takes mine, and when I rip my eyes from my sister, I find Calli watching me with a similar expression on her face.

“It wasn’t Alex, Evie.”

“B-but—”

“It was Daemon.”

I stare at her in disbelief.

“N-no. It was him.”

“Trust me, it was Daemon.”

“But—”

“They’re twins, babe,” Blake says, filling in some of the blanks.

“It was him,” I whisper, still refusing to process this information.

Calli shakes her head. “That was my dark knight, not your cheeky one.”

My brow furrows as I think back.

His scent. Was it right?

His eyes. Were they the ones I get lost in?
