“What is it?” I repeat, concern flooding my veins, sobering me instantly.

“I’m pregnant,” she wails, her tears finally spilling free.

“You’re—”

“I fucked up, Evie. I’m sorry. I’m so sorry, I—”

Footsteps sound out a beat before Alex appears in the doorway with a fresh cocktail in his hand.

“What’s going on?” he asks, taking in my shocked expression and Blakely’s sobs.

“Uh… Blakely,” I whisper, not taking my eyes from Alex’s. “Whose is it?”

She breaks down at that question, telling me everything I need to know.

“I’m sorry; I need to go.” She cuts the call before I get a chance to say anything.

“Whose is what?” Alex asks confused.

Pushing the iPad aside, I stand and walk to him, taking the drink from his and twisting my fingers with his.

“Something to worry about when we get back,” I say with a cringe. “Let’s go and enjoy our last night. Reality is already too close.”

He studies me for a beat, but he must see the determination on my face, because he gives in.

“One more night in paradise, baby,” he says, pulling me into his arms when we make it out to what we’ve turned into a makeshift dance floor.

“But forever together,” I finish, my lips finding his as I try to force down the unease of what’s to come.

So much for the end of the drama…

We fall quietly into our own little bubble, but inevitably, it’s broken when Seb bellows, “Last one naked and in the pool is a loser.”

“Do they never stop?” I laugh.

“It would be boring if they did. Come on.”

Together, and along with all our friends, we leave what little we’re wearing behind and all bomb into the pool, knowing that no matter what hits us next, we’re all going to be ready for it.

Because together, we can overcome anything.
