“Obsession then,” Steph said. “Like psycho stuff, huh?”

“Really?” I asked.

“Steph,” Katie said. “She’s been through enough with real psycho stuff.”

“Sorry,” Steph said. “Bad reference there.”

“I’m just saying…” I shook my head again. “Watching him get put into handcuffs…”

“Had to be sexy,” Steph whispered.

“I thought it would be,” I said. “I fantasized about it. But it was terrifying. The entire thing was terrifying. I didn’t know what was going to happen to him. The fact that he just threw his entire career up into the air for me.”

“Which is true love,” Poppy said.

There was a knock at my office door.

I took one step and Steph grabbed my arm. “Please don’t throw it all away. This place and this job isn’t worth a thing. Not if you have something real going on.”

I unlocked my office door and stood face to face with one of the bosses.

“Jeff,” I said. “I was just talking with Steph, Poppy, and Katie.”

“Mind if I come in?” Jeff asked.

“Of course,” I said as I stepped back.

“We’ll get out of here,” Steph said. “Nice tie, Jeff. Are those octopuses on the tie? Clever.”

Steph snorted and had zero fear as she left my office.

“How are we looking with this new project?” Jeff asked as he played with his tie.

“I’m doing my research. You know. Pasta sauce.”

“You’ve got to give me something, April.”

“The best I’ve got is a blind taste test. Get raw reaction. That’s the best way to offer proof of concept to customers before they buy a jar.”

“I think I like that,” Jeff said. “See? You belong here. Not chasing ideas. That was terrible to send you away.”

Jeff smiled with that fake corporate bullshit smile and I pictured myself quitting.

Right there on the spot.

Quitting, leaving, and then…

Well, showing up at Seb’s place to offer forgiveness and my body.

My hands beganto shake as the red light seemed to be stuck.

I had a horrible vision.

What if the light was somehow stuck?

It just stayed red forever?

What would happen?
