Page 53 of More than Friends

“But what?” she interrupts.

“It felt like trying to kiss my sister.” I probably should have made up another reason.

She doesn’t move or change her facial expression for a moment and then she starts to laugh.

Now I’m the one wrinkling my brow.

“The feeling is mutual.” She leans into me and laughs harder. After a minute, she pulls back and shakes her head. “I don’t get it. I mean on paper...”

She waves her hand between us. “We should be all over each other, but there’s just nothing there, is there? No spark at all.”

I sigh, relieved she feels the same way. “No – nothing at all.”

She wraps her arm around me and starts walking again. “We’ll just have to be friends, won’t we?”

“I’d like that,” I answer.

Maggie and Declan Text Thread

Declan: Are you in town?

Maggie: Yes.

Declan: Are you free?

Maggie: Now?

Declan: Yes.

Maggie: Are you asking to come over?

Declan: Yes. If you’d like that.

Maggie:

Declan: Are you ghosting me now?

Maggie: I’m thinking.

Declan: Ouch

Maggie: Yeah. Come over.

Declan: Don’t sound so excited.

Maggie (middle finger emoji)

Declan: (smirking emoji) Ok. I deserve that. Do you really want me to come?

Maggie: Yes. Come.
