“Yeah. Did you know Declan had to rescue Willat his apartment? She’d handcuffed herself to him.”
Celeste’s eyes nearly pop out of her head.
“How did Declan rescue them?” I ask. He most definitely did not share this with me. I’m surprised. This sounds like the sort of story he’d normally love to tell.
“Bolt cutters.”
Celeste covers her mouth.
Elizabeth leans in and whispers. “Truthfully. I think Will likes her.”
I didn’t think it was possible for Celeste’s eyes to get any bigger, but they do. “You can’t be serious.”
Elizabeth straightens up. “I suggested he hire her, and he did.”
“But they’ve been at each other’s throats.”
Elizabeth just arches her eyebrow.
“God, you’re wicked.”
“Will needs her. They will be a good fit together, and I actually think they will work well together.”
I just shake my head. I’m going to have to ask Declan about this.
“Anyway, James says that Will has been a complete wreck this weekend – what did I tell you? She’s gotten under his skin.”
Celeste just snorts. “Maybe they just regular hate each other and not like in a sexy way.”
Elizabeth just shoots Celeste a look. “No. Definitely not. Will was freaking out because Declan flirted with her. Why would he care? Declan flirts with everyone.”
Declan flirted with her?Is this why he hasn’t brought it up? Is this why he’s not getting together with me even though he’s in town? I start to feel sweat roll down my back.
“Is she pretty?” I can’t help myself.
“Gorgeous.” Elizabeth fiddles with her phone and then shows me a picture. She is gorgeous.
“She’s also smart. Graduated from Harvard Law.”
With every word, my stomach sinks a bit.
“I guess we’ll see how this plays out,” Celeste says with a smile.
“We will, won’t we?” Elizabeth confirms.
“Maggie, we haven’t heard a word about your love life in a while.” Elizabeth turns her attention to me.
I cough into my wine glass.
“Yeah. Give us the scoop. You’ve been seeing someone, right?”
“No. Why would you say that?”
Elizabeth and Celeste exchange a glance. “We can tell when you’re getting laid and when you aren’t.”
“Ew – what?”
Celeste shrugs. “You’ve been more relaxed the last few months. I figured there was a man.”
