She thinks for a second. “I don’t know, but I’m fine.”
She leans in to Ian and says, “Ready for a walk, little man?”
“I’ll get him in the stroller,” I say, walking toward the door.
“Thanks, let me grab my shoes and we’ll go.”
Chapter Sixty-Six
Declan
Maggie has been atCamp David with Elizabeth for the past week. I went on a quick trip to Banff. I haven’t traveled in months. It was nice to get away – get out in nature, but I had this nagging feeling I shouldn’t have left.
Maggie didn’t need me to go to Camp David. She told me she thought time alone with Elizabeth would be good, and she’s surrounded by a small army of helpers at Camp David, but Ian’s just a little less than two months, and I’m wondering if it was wrong of me to leave. We haven’t talked about custody or her expectations for me. We need to. We will. Soon.
I miss them. I miss them both so badly.
I’m out of the car as soon as I pull up in front of the building. I don’t even grab my bags. I’ll get them later.
I find the women out back, sitting on the patio. I spot Elizabeth first. She has a lemonade in her hand.
“Oh Declan, come over and have some lemonade.” She picks up the pitcher and pours me a glass.
She looks better than I’ve seen her in months. Color has returned to her face. She seems relaxed. I take the glass from her and turn to Maggie. She nods at me, her expression cool.
“Where are the babies?” I ask, looking around.
“Napping,” Maggie says.
I take a seat in the chair next to Maggie and sip on the lemonade.
“How has Ian been sleeping?” I ask Maggie.
“Fine.” Her voice is just a touch sharp. Is she angry? We talked about me leaving. We talked about how she thought having time alone with Elizabeth would be good for both of them. She literally encouraged me to go.
“Who else is coming this weekend?”
